If you had the choice of letting Asante go to the highest bidder, and spending that money instead on Karlos Dansby, would you do it? If BB felt Dansby could stay healthy, I think he might.

In other words, what do you spend that money on - bearing in mind the other position might be where we focus our attention on Day One of the draft - LB or CB?

First off Asante Samuel is asking for $10M+ per year, and I don't think Dansby will cost quite that much.

If Dansby and Samuel came at the same price I might take Asante since we know for sure what he can do in the system. I do think it's easier for NE to replace DB's than LB's though.

If we're going by what each will likely get in free agency then Dansby is likely closer to what NE would be willing to spend.

I wouldn't pay either of them $10M+ per year by the way.

if had to choose between the 2, i say dansby... in our defensive scheme, the front seven is the priority and everybody else (on defense) is just along for the ride... assante samuel is an elite cb, no doubt but with a strong front seven, anybody in the secondary can be a playmaker and have a solid contribution like randall gay who i think is a third-string corner behind samuel and chad scott...

I know it's not ideal, but in '04 this team went the distance with a very good front seven, excellent play from the safeties, and nobodies at corner. If Dansby can handle this defense I'd focus more attention on LB than CB.

My strategy: Ignore Samuel and put all our free agent efforts on re-signing Gay (well after Moss), AND draft two corners in the first three rounds.

interesting take. As long as Dansby and another LB with the other pick in the first three rounds is part of the equation, I couldn't agree more.

If we sign Dansby, then all we have to do is draft some corners. Unless Asante steps down from that 10M per year figure, I don't think he'll be back in New England.

That's a big IF, but it would be fine with me. Signing Dansby would be really smart, IMO.

For the same money....I will take Asante all day long. He has been a shut down corner for us will get paid by somebody....just not the Pats at 10M per.

    Dansby is very good though.

I understand where your coming from. It all starts in the trenches, but Hobbs is back there and hasn't done much this year. Don't get me wrong, he has played well, but not great like Samuel. You still need talent to have a good secondary.

I like how people keep saying we don't need Asante b/c we won in 04 w/ nobody at CB, and ignore that Asante was a CB that year

To be perfectly honest, I don't know enough about Dansby to know if he can fit into the 3-4 scheme. His injury past would scare me a bit too.

As for Samuel, I think he will just look for too much for the Pats to keep him. He is probably going to ask for and get more than Nate Clements got last year.

Arizona may franchise him anyway. Or they will extend him. Asante will cost more than Dansby. But Asante is known to do well here whereas Dansby is unknown. I'm glad it's up to Bill.

I would, because we can always get marcus trufant a underated cornerback from seattle, and we need a linebacker who is young and will last.

...and just as important, "Who is his agent"?

I mention this because I believe the Poston's represented him when he was drafted. If that is still true, then don't expect to see him with the Pats.

He's playing in a 4-3 defense now, so it may be hard to project how effective he'd be in on the inside in a 3-4. He does have the size (6-4, 250) that BB loves. He apparently has put on 20 lbs of muscle since his Auburn days and hasn't lost much, if any, speed. He is supposed to be excellent in coverage (3 picks this year), which BB also likes in his MLBs. I seem to remember that he dropped slightly in the draft but can't remember why.
