Isn't he going to wear the green dot helmet tonight?

Yes he has the dot tonight. Don't see him going anywhere but the 53 man roster.

All due respect, Mayo wears the green dot. Guyton wore the green dot when Mayo was injured. I don't know if Spike has ever worn the dot.

The question is...."Can you be a third string ( or fourth string ) green dot wearer and still make the team, if you don't play any of the special teams?"

I hope the answer is "yes."

I'd keep McKenzie over Alexander any day of the week.

I'd rather keep a guy with developmental potential than a guy who absolutely cannot see the field in any situation other than STs.

I think the issue is more that McKenzie has a better chance to backup Spikes' role than Guyton does. If Mayo and Guyton are on the field, Mayo has to be the initiator, the guy taking on the guards first and he's less free to use his speed and instincts.

If Mayo and McKenzie are out there, McKenzie can do the grunt work and Mayo can make more plays. McKenzie has more potential as the first backup in that role, rather than as the generic "4th" ILB on the depth chart.

This is assuming, of course, that he has shown the coaches he can sufficiently fill that role. If he hasn't, and doesn't play ST, then there's a problem.

Exactly, talk about one dimensional players. Can't have too many of the Slater, Alexander types. Look at the Bodden situation, players get injured in football. You need to have depth at these positions and these type players add nothing to positional depth. On the other hand Arrington proved to be a difference maker on ST and worthy of a spot. I just don't think what Alexander and Slater bring to the table is worth cutting a player who you know, might actually play and contribute on offense or defense at some point.

    Guyton can play special teams.

McKenzie is definitely on the bubble. Not only isn't he playing on ST, but he didn't enter the Rams game until the 4th quarter despite Eric Alexander missing the game. I imagine he has done ST work as well as defensive stuff in practice, but he hasn't shown much in games.

It will be interesting to see him get some more extended playing time against the Giants. At least he is PS-eligible.

He didn't enter the game until the 4th because Bill was playing the starters into the 4th. If the starters had shown better things in the first half, my guess is McKenzie comes in in the 3rd.

There are a bunch of teams that have recently converted to the 3-4 defense, and most of them need depth on both the line and among the linebackers. If the Patriots try to stash McKenzie on the P.S., they'll almost certainly lose him.

I agree. There's no way he makes the P.S. He's not like Spikes who is a pure 3-4 LB, Mckenzie could play in the 4-3

Wow, I think you waaaaayyyyy overvalue Matthew Slater.

He's a Goner. We have 2 or 3 guys at each of the ST positions who can do what he does AND be somewhat relevant as a backup regular team player.

Actually, no. Fletcher and Alexander have both gotten reps in the regular defense, ahead of McKenzie during the preseason.

I think you need to re-read what he said.

Right, but the poster's contention was that they didn't put McK in until the 4th quarter "even though Alexander was out", and used that as a reason for him being on the bubble. The first team defense (outside of the DL which seemed to rotate), was out there for the first 3 quarters, so McK not being there only means he's not a starter. It bears no relevance to his roster status.
