Patriots announce the release of kicker David Ruffer. Incumbent Stephen Gostkowski now the only kicker on roster.

Not exactly earth shattering news, though it may be disheartening to those that dwell on Gostkowski's misses or his salary.

I have confidence that Gost will be more accurate this coming season. Every player has good and bad seasons. Brady's 2009 season wasn't terrible, but it wasn't as good as his '07 season. In 2010 he was back to his old self again. Granted, in 2009 he was coming back from injury, but I still think Gost will be better than last season.

The only surprise is that it happened this soon.

Yeah, I would have figured that they would want to keep a second kicker around for special team drills, etc., during training camp and preseason games. Of course that's not to say that they won't sign another kicker for that purpose.

Glad that the Bleacher report insisted on telling us how Gostkowski was going to be cut and how bad he really was, despite what the numbers actually say..

    No Jersey Selected

I'd like to see Lawrence Tynes signed, and see if Ghost can handle real competition.

Because the ideal competition for Gostkowski is a kicker with a worse career average, a worse performance over the last two years, and at best the same performance at KOs. And, oh yeah, he's six years older and 20 pounds lighter, too.

I realize this is a bit of a sore subject due to some seeing the BR article as reasonable and some being pretty pissed off about it, but the article itself didn't exactly "insist on telling us how Gostkowski was going to be cut and how bad he really was."

The article stated that he was the 3rd highest kicker in the league, compared some statistics, and raised the question of debate for a player at a highly paid position on a team known for cutting those kinds of salaries...nothing more.

The author's main claim was that it was a realistic possibility based on what he deemed as a reasonable argument. It may have had a biased view towards pointing out some of Gost's flaws, but I don't think he ever claimed that "he'd definitely be cut."

There will be plenty of articles that we see over the course of the next 8 months that will be waaaay worse than the article about Gostkowski, so save some of that anger for those moments too ;)
