Justice's wife launches 'tea party' group - latimes.com

"I am an ordinary citizen from Omaha, Neb., who just may have the chance to preserve liberty along with you and other people like you," she said at a recent panel discussion with tea party leaders in Washington. Thomas went on to count herself among those energized into action by President Obama's "hard-left agenda."

But Thomas is no ordinary activist.

She is the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and she has launched a tea-party-linked group that could test the traditional notions of political impartiality for the court.

Not really. There is precedent for how to deal with situations like this. The wife of Pennsylvania Ed Rendell (D) is a federal judge and handles it extremely well. She recuses herself from any case even remotely involving him or his politics and she NEVER campaigns or speaks out on politics. The only time you see her is on the podium on election night as the candidate's wife.
Just because a spouse is politically active, it doesn't mean that the other spouse should be unfairly tainted.

Good for her. If it were a "pass Obamacare group", me thinks Patters would be perfectly fine with it.

The group plans to issue score cards for Congress members and be involved in the November election, although Thomas would not specify how. She said it would accept donations from various sources -- including corporations -- as allowed under campaign finance rules recently loosened by the Supreme Court.

I don't know if she actually said these words - but if she did, it certainly doesn't bode well for keeping her spouse's occupation out of her personal politics - especially seeing as how it was a controversial ruling and for the wife of one of the judges who passed the ruling to single it out and say she's going to take full advantage of it surely seems to violate some sort of moral, if not ethical, sense of propriety.

Hmmm ... a sexist thread and story posted by a liberal ... go figure.

Good for her that she is more than just the wifey in that household.

Good for her that their relationship is not affected by her political independence.

Compare this thread to the Sarah and Todd Palin threads and the sexism is even more apparent.

The more I think about it, may cause an ethical conundrum for Clarence.. as previously mentioned Ed Rendell's wife is a judge and she recuses herself from certain cases that would cause an appearance of impropriety.. and may taint the judicial process...

In this case "Liberty Central" is very inclusive of all things right, and will cause issues.... not that there is anything wrong with that.. can envision someone arguing before the Supreme Court that Clarence should recuse himself from just about any case that comes before them. .

Was listening to the news this AM, and they were discussing that if the health care bill passes it will probably go to the Supreme Court as a states rights issue .. Liberty Central implies that it has something to do with health care..

If so, will there be an appearance of impropriety and will Clarence have to recuse himself??????

As this evolves, the more it looks like an appearance of impropriety...

I heard last night that this involves four justices on the SC includnig her husband. To me thats a major conflict of interest. Four judges on the SC throwing their support behind a political party? Not koser
