He goes and does this for the greater good of the team, seriously for everything he has done for the organisation up to this latest good will gesture he is by far and away the greatest in Pats history and i don't think he'll ever be surpassed.

He is the ultimate team player and for someone as good as him to have 0 ego, and just go out there and do business is phenomenal. Since the SB he hasn't once come out and complained about any aspect of that game or any personnel because he buys into the notion 'lose as a team' more than anyone else in NE.

Now we have all this extra cap space i think i'm salivating at the thought of what we can do with it.....

Am I missing something? I thought he converted his salary this year into a bonus. From my understanding he is not going to make one penny less than what he was owed (neither should he).
I mean its great and all but not like he is taking less money or anything. Lets not go overboard.

    Disable Jersey

For some strange reason, this restructuring has become the equivalent of curing cancer.

I agree he's a team first guy and has proven that over and over - but he's going to see this $$ either way.

Well then I can almost guarantee you that every player in the roster would love to restructure their contracts in the same way. Imagine then. At least 80 different forms of cancer cured.

How is freeing up $7.25m cap space anything else but good, the dude realises the TEAM is important and has done this so his TEAM has the best shot at winning the next SB

    No Jersey Selected

At the expense of the 2013 and 2014 cap.

I haven't looked at the details but generally when a good player restructures it just means that they converted their salary to a bonus which spreads the cap hit to later years. So Brady isn't losing any money, just getting more up front which helps the books for this year. It is still a good thing, just not some amazing move on Brady's part.

Exactly. Every player on the league would love to do it. It means that money is now guaranteed. Teams do it with player they know they will not be cutting in the forseeable future.
By the way. Can a life preserver really qualify as an island?

Because it is just an accounting move that Brady had to say "Yeah, sure, whatever" because it affected his contract.

Brady didn't give up any money.

Also, why did you feel the need to create an entirely new thread? There is already a thread that is over 100 posts long on this subject..

The dude is getting his cash anywhere from 6 to 11 months earlier than he was already going to get it since it was all guaranteed already anyway as of the last week of the 2011 season... Most players will do that in a heartbeat unless they are afraid of being cut due to future cap cost, and he isn't. In fact for him it creates leverage to get an extension done. That will lower his cap next season but again the tradeoff will be more cash up front in Tommy's hand...

Freeing up cap can be good or bad, too. That's what the JETS keep doing - pushing money forward as you're transferring it from one credit card to the next. Eventually you still have to pay the bill (higher than comfortable cap hits) and sometimes it's even more unpalatable later. NE doesn't over due it for that reason. And they do it with a guy they aren't concerned about performance and value wise going forward.

To be fair, when I created this name his trajectory was aimed a lot higher. Hopefully McCourty gets back on track next season.

I hope so too. This secondary needs all the help it can get.

You realize that he's not taking a paycut, right? It's all in the accounting.

If Welker was using cap space as a lever to get a long term contract, TFB screwed him.

    What we wanna think happened:

BB: Tom, we want to restructure your contract. You would recieve 2 Mil less then we agress but the cap savings will be 7.5 mil and will allow us to sign X.

Tom: No problem, if it will help us win I'm all in!

    What would have happened:

BB: Tom, we want to restructure your contract. You would recieve 2 Mil less then we agress but the cap savings will be 7.5 mil and will allow us to sign X.

    Tom: Go **** yourself

    What did happen

BB: Tom, we want to restructure your contract. We will convert some of this to a bonus that you will recieve now instead of later but the cap savings will be 7.5 mil and will allow us to sign X.

    Tom: OK
