Apparently the Patriots either didn't want to, or were simply unable to, add a rookie QB, either drafted or undrafted.

What do you make of this state of affairs?

Belichcik isn't prone toreveal much, even if you ask him. You have to see what he does, instead.

He felt so good about Ryan Mallett that he cut Hoyer last season, and carried only two QBs. Only twice in his coaching history has he only carried two QBs, one of whom was a sophomore QB. Tom Brady and now Ryan Mallett.

I read into thathistory that Belichick is satsified with Mallett as an above average backp QB. He may even view him as a valid candidate for the Successor.

Andy Kafka is a highly thought of PS third QB; but that is all he is.

Camp fodder. I suspect we'll be back to Brady/Mallett for the final 53.

The Pats could use Edelman some to take throwing reps if they need to. Also, Nick Caserio has been known to get out there and take reps throwing the ball. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Pats pick up Greg McElroy if the Jets release him. Kid is a good QB who just needs time to develop into a good back-up/spot starter.

Theres still a chance to add a QB. What if McElroy gets cut from the Jests? I can see BB picking him up.

Also, I think the Pats should play the hell out of Mallet in pre season and up his trade value. Who knows, he still could be dealt this season?

Here's the thing. The Pats are only going to keep 2 QB's on the 53, but for TC they'll want to go with 4 arms at least, in order to limit Brady's throws to a reasonable level. As to Kafka, he's an interesting prospect. If he does real well the Pats might be more willing to trade Mallett if there is a QB injury that make it a legitimate possibility. I think Cleveland is still a possibility if they don't like what they see from Weeden in their OTA's. As for Kafka, I think he still has PS eligibility, and if he looks good, the Pats would pay him a premium (up to the full 2nd year minimum) to keep him there. BB will always have 3 arms during the season for practice, I think he's become accustomed to having only 2 on the roster.

The Pats haven't brought 4 QBs to training camp for a few years now IIRC with QB #4 usually getting cut after mini camps but before TC. I believe they still have Chris Simms on the coaching staff if they need an extra arm. I'm also fairly certain Kafka does not have any practice squad eligibility left which means they keep him if they like him, or Mallett goes (presumably in a trade).

As you know, we'll have four QB's for camp.

Right that there will be 4 QBs at some point.

Good point that coaches, etc. can fill in the gap if something goes wrong.

Looking back to last year's timeline involving quarterbacks:

    - March 13: Pats place 2nd round tender on Brian Hoyer
    - March 23: Hoyer signs the tender
    - April 26-28: NFL Draft
    - May 11-12: Rookie mini-camp
    - May 15: Brian Hartline released
    - August 31: Brian Hoyer released

While the Pats may opt to go with four quarterbacks in training camp, last year that was not the case. With a 90-man off season roster there is certainly room to do so, but it is not a given. With the relatively large number of receivers that will be on this year's final roster, perhaps the Pats want them working a bit more with Brady and Mallett rather than with a brand new Patriot that will be eventually be cut.
