WASHINGTON -- The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff says the U.S. military has a plan to attack Iran, although he thinks a strike is probably a bad idea.

Adm. Mike Mullen, the nation's highest-ranking military officer, has often warned that a military strike on Iran would have serious and unpredictable ripple effects around the Middle East. At the same time, he says the risk of Iran developing a nuclear weapon is unacceptable.

Mullen would not say which risk he thinks is worse. But he tells NBC's "Meet The Press" that a military strike remains an option if need be.

On a related note, when I was in Canada, I was told of the old Canadian plan for resisting a potential attack from the US in the 1960s. Run to the arctic, establish new settlements there and wage an insurgency against the US from there.

Funny in a way, but every Western nation has a contingency plan for just about every situation involving another nation.

If it is so obvious and well known, why announce it???

Why is it newsworthy?? Saber rattling means nothing to these countries, where theocracy's rule.

I'm willing to bet we also have a strike plan in place for Syria, Russia. China, North Korea and even Cuba needed. Having a strike plan is the way we have always done things. But rest assured ... if we have one we'll do it and then we'll screw it up.

The announcement must be to convey threat to Iran over something... as others have posted, I think we generally believe our military has attack plans for many situations so to place emphasis on it must be political in nature.
