anyone have any impressions from their first game.? i thought it was quite good. should be a far stiffer test for our O line this week compared to the chiefs .

They had 4 sacks, and seemed to get a lot of pressure on Pennington. I think it is key to keep Cassel on his feet this week if we want any chance of winning. We definitely need a huge day from Maroney, Morris and Jordan.

I think the writers were not impressed with Gholston in the preseason but very very impressed with Calvin Pace.

well they gave up only 50 rushing yards to brown and ricky williams . iam hoping having faulk back improves the pass protection a bit.

Well, Ricky Williams isn't really a great back anymore. Serviceable but not great. Ronnie Brown is probably still hurt, and the Dolphins O-Line isn't as good as the Pats IMO. I expect us to get at least 100 yards rushing between all our RBs.

This defense has a very different feel than last year.

The Jets showed more pass rush last weekend than they had in all of 2007 but I wouldn't classify it as anywhere near 'dominant' from that one week. Pace did look fantastic. On his sack, he raced from the ROLB position and met Pennington on his fifth step. He's very fast for a big guy and will give Tackles a lot of trouble this year. Bryan Thomas accounted for two of the sacks but he's so inconsistent that there's no way to tell if he'll do it again next week.

One note about Gholston is that while he didn't get the stats, he was involved on a number of plays and had Pennington all wrapped up on a Sean Ellis' sack (Ellis got to Chad's ankles a split second earlier). He's got a lot to learn but the speed and strength are there and he could bust out later this year.

On the other hand, Harris and Rhodes weren't involved much in the rush last week (busy keeping the run under control) and that could change in blitz packages as well.

Bottom line, I honestly don't know what to expect from the Jets this week other than to assume they will test Cassell early and if he doesn't get the quick dumps off, he could be in for a long day.

One last point, Kris Jenkins is the unsung hero of the defense this year. As you guys well know, the NT doesn't get the glory, but Jenkins is playing with great enthusiasm and he made short work of the Dolphins interior line on Sunday. Other than the second Safety position, there really aren't any glaring weaknesses to go after.

Judging from what I've read, many here won't believe this, but I was *really* eager to see this defense go against Brady. Not complaining as I appreciate the advantage we have now, and nothing is a sure thing anyway, but it sure would have been a heck of a game to see.

Oddly, the rap on the Dolphins OLine is they are better run-blockers than pass-blockers. That's not what I saw. Despite the 4 sacks, they did a decent job pass-blocking and a terrible job on the run. I do credit Kris Jenkins though with disrupting their push repeatedly. That's the battle to watch if you follow the line-play.

great analysis Dan. The one thing that has me wondering is that Pace looked so good in pass rushing and in return he didnt have an opportunity to guard up against the pass, he is supposed to be a good pass coverage LB and thats what gave us fits against the fins

Are the Jets using Jenkins more like a Wilfork-type NT who will control the line and allow the lb's to make plays? Or are they turning him loose in an attacking 3-4 like Wade Phillips likes to run?

They will bring the house against Cassel. I'm sure we know that and the game plan will accomidate for that.

Thanks, that is kind of what I assumed, given Mangini's pedigree but I wasn't sure.

I agree. Welker is the safety valve of the offense and what made him great is the chemistry with TB. I hope Cassel spends some extra time with him to get in sync. I have a strange feeling Cassel will continue to find Thomas, backups sticking together and all. Thomas looked good last week.

One note I would like to bring up, Damien Woody looked phenomenal at RT sunday. It is the fish and it is only one game but I just had to mention it especially when he was called a scrub by most here.

I didn't watch the game, but Miami has a very young and inexperience o-line (2 rookies and a second year player). Pennington did have a pretty good game overall and arguably outplayed Favre. I think I will reserve judgement on the Jets' defense for a few more weeks.

The pass rush seems better than last year, but it couldn't be worse.

Even with Cassel at QB, this should be a better test for the Jets because the Pats' o-line is far superior to the Dolphins. Also, I don't see the Pats abandoning the run like the Dolphins did eventhough they weren't that far behind the Dolphins score-wise.

He was going up against either Matt Roth or Phillip Merling all game. Let's see how he does vs. Vrabel and/or Thomas before you crown him as a great pick up.

I have no problem admitting I was wrong about the guy if he proves himself, but Roth and Merling aren't exactly a bookend DE combo that sends shivers up and down QBs' spines.

Im not calling him great, I just think its safe to safe he is not the scrub many said here. I had to rationalize why he was an upgrade over Anthony frickin Clement
