    Hey everyone,

I did a film breakdown of the broken run play against the Jets last week. Anyone have any idea what happened in this play?
    http://patsfilm.blogspot.com/2007/12/brady-scramble-vs-jets.html

As you can see, Brady couldn't have seen the blitzer, and it seems like Maroney didn't either. Why did he pull it back and scramble?

(PS: an earlier post on my blog notes the win/loss record of teams after playing the pats...I noticed it on this forum later, but I already had the post up. Plus, it goes into a little more depth. Enjoy)

I can't watch the video while I'm at work, but assuming that Brady couldn't have seen a blitz is probably incorrect.

if it's the first busted play early in the game (can't check the vid right now) Brady said on the radio that he eff'ed up the blitz assignments and instead of handing the ball to Marony and having him get blown up in the backfield after noticing the blitzer he decided to freestyle and take off....

Belichick commented on that play during his Monday press conference. Brady DID see the blitzer and knew he'd be in the backfield by the time the ball was handed off to Maroney. The other unplanned QB keeper was a flubbed handoff.

There were two early broken plays that I can think of. On the first one, I think the audible was confused by the players (Maroney?) and was merely a screwed up play. In the second, Brady saw the safety coming unblocked and made the decision to take it himself (applauded by BB).

Yeah, either Brady continued to show his amazing pocket awareness, or Maroney was in the wrong position for the handoff so Brady took it on his own.

brady was completely right to keep the ball, and maroney definitely screwed up not picking up that blitz.

Maroney was the designated ball carrier on that play, it's not his responsibility to pick up the blitz.

it is his responsibility to pick up the blitz when brady doesnt hand him the ball. its his responsibility to not be an idiot. just because it wasnt in the "job description" doesnt mean he should not have done it.

No, it's not. On a running play, the RB's job is to take the handoff and run with it. That's it. I do hope you're joking, but sadly I don't think you are. Brady didn't hand him the ball because the blitzer was coming. How exactly is Maroney supposed to block a blitzer from behind Brady?

did you see the play? after brady kept the ball, maroney just jogged to the line when he could have blocked the blitzer instead. he had to assume one of two things; either brady decided to fake the handoff, or brady decided to run it himself. in either scenario, maroneys job is to block. so i was wrong. it IS in the job description

I can't possibly know what Maroney was thinking during the play, but I know it can be tough for 2 people to make the same split-second decision. If Brady had a way to communicate to Maroney in advance that he was going to keep the ball, Maroney could have reacted to it, but it was a last-second decision.

Earlier in the season Brady mentioned that they have an audible where they can warn a receiver with just a look that the ball is coming at him. When that happens, the other 9 people on the field have no idea. This is like that, except that 10 other people had no idea what was happening. I can hardly blame Maroney for not reading Brady's mind.

You're right, Maroney should be a mind-reader and know that Brady was going to completely ignore the play call and do something else. Furthermore, he should have known exactly what Brady was going to do, since he's a mind-reader and all. Also, it's good to have your RB thinking about heading for contact with a blitzer on a running play. That's just sound football right there. Sure he'll get tackled instantaneously 99.9% of the time that happens, but if Brady ever decides to change the play without telling him, he'll help Brady pick up no yardage at all. This of course because Brady ran away from the blitzer and wasn't tackled by him.

Bang up job on that analysis.

you dont have to be a mind-reader to realize that you are not getting the ball WHEN YOU DONT GET THE BALL. are you just dumb?
maroney should know what to do once he doesnt get the ball.

I don't think you're the one to be handing out "dumb" comments on this one. Find someone who agrees with you and get back to me. So far I've seen several comments disagreeing and/or hoping you were joking. Nobody agreeing with you though. Wonder why that is?

Fair enough. But how do you know what that is? Maybe his responsibility is to make it look like he did get the handoff and to hit the hole all the same. Or maybe his responsibility is going into the flats when he doesn't get the ball and waiting for a throw. How can you possibly say he failed in his responsibility without any idea what his responsibility on the play was?

This is not the play that Brady saw the blitzer and decided to keep it, this is the 'miscommunication play'.
You are making a big fuss over the WRONG play.

when ur a pro, u had BEST be able to adjust...

just cuz brady kept the ball doesnt mean that maroney should have just stood there not taking hte blitzer...

however, i think the prob was that maroney never saw that blitzer, and after he saw brady hold the ball, he went behind the line trying to block someone if they got through....
