Mike Florio has a report out saying the Browns nearly traded for Jim Harbaugh. Ian Rapoport cites two high ranking 49ers sources calling the report "completely false" and "ridiculous." Florio gets upset and says it's true because the 49ers haven't gone on record to deny it.

Thirty minutes later 49ers CEO Jed York shows up:

Jed York @JedYork
@ProFootballTalk @RapSheet is this on the record? Report isn't true

:singing:

Florio ignores York's response and instead tweets his 'rumor' again ten minutes later, lol.

Florio is to dinkhood as suckitude is to the Jets.

the browns almost traded for a headcoach?

1.)why would the 49's do that?

2.) what in gods green earth makes the browns think Harb would even stay in the nfl, hed go right back to college.

3.)florio is on crack

I'm not a Florio fan, but he's getting a lot of backup on this, most notably Chris Mortenson (ESPN) and Mike Freeman (Bleacher Report, formerly CBS Sports), but also Mike Loyko (NE Patriots Draft), Joe Bussell (NFLosophy on Twitter, worked for Bucs, has a bunch of NFL connections), and Joe Lull (CBS Cleveland).

Really the only side denying anything is the 49ers, and they have obvious reasons to act like this never happened even if it did.

Browns did indeed make a run at Jim Harbaugh that reached a serious stage, sources confirm substance of @ProFootballTalk report.

https://twitter.com/mortreport/status/437056612994260992

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com published a report Friday saying the Browns came close to trading for San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Florio’s report is true.

A source told 92.3 The Fan prior to Pettine’s hiring on Jan. 23 that Harbaugh expressed interest in the job when the Browns requested permission to interview 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula. The station did not report the news because confirmation was unable to be obtained from additional sources.

Florio's not flying solo on this.

^ This, Florio is getting a substantial amount of support on this. Literally the only side denying is so far are the 9ers, and like Sciz said, they have great reason to.

Every other media outlet is basically saying it "100%" took place.

Yeah I saw others backing him within minutes of posting the thread. Woops, haha.

Still think it's funny that a higher up of a team actually responded to him after he kind of called them out though.

Maybe the browns "nearly" traded for harbaugh right up until they broached the subject with the niners, at which point they were met with a resounding NO.

LOL........nobody has heard of sarcasm

none of this makes any sense at all.....which is why I think it is a ruse at most....if it happened at all

but leave it to florio to be the pink poodle in the room

The niners have no reason to admit it's true. Would not look good for them when trying to get free agents if there's trouble in paradise. Sounds like the GM and Harbaugh are at odds. For once, the browns tried to make a good move. I'd easily give up 1st + change for Harbaugh if I were them.

neither the niners nor harbaugh have any reason to even be considering it

the browns are the stinking rotting corpse in the room, and it is spreading

Their GM and Harbaugh hate each other. Harbaugh is a *****, but you have to put up with him because he's that good. 3 NFCCG appearances and a near super bowl win.

I think Florio is so hard up to throw garbage against a wall, that he didn't properly verify before coming out with it......even if something did happen, it sounds like he wasn't really sure what happened but ran with a story anyway.

Florio is usually money on reporting. His opinion is just really annoying. Other sources have confirmed this report as well.

It's hard to screw up when you're spoon-fed information by the league offices. But Florio does mess up more often than he should, difference being that he quickly deletes posted stories as soon as they're proven wrong.

Jed York said on Twitter that the report of a trade nearly happening “isn’t true,” the 49ers privately acknowledge that the Browns wanted to make the deal. It’s virtually impossible for Harbaugh to have not known about the discussions, which in the opinion of the 49ers involved the Browns inquiring about Harbaugh and the 49ers quickly saying no.

Multiple reports say otherwise. Beyond our own report (by which we continue to stand), Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Browns’ attempt to land Harbaugh reached a “serious stage,” and he confirmed the substance of our report.

We reported that the 49ers and Browns had agreed to compensation, and that Harbaugh ultimately opted not to leave San Francisco.

There is a narrative that always gets used by the media folks breaking these that makes me laugh.

It goes - the story is true and you'll notice no one denied it on the record in my story. Then it shifts to the only one who denied it is the party who looks bad and of course they denied it - my story made them look bad. They can't be trusted. You'll notice the other side didn't deny it. That proves its true.

The 49ers have 3 options - confirm it, deny it, say nothing. All 3 will prove the validity of the story according to the writer.

As for Cleveland not denying it, which also "proves" it is true - we'll ignore that they have no motivation to deny it since (as pathetic as this is) a real attempt to lure Harbaugh is the most positive PR thing the organization will have seen in a long time. We have to ignore the motives of those not denying it. Only the motives of the party disagreeing with the media matters.

If all this is ultimately is proven true, it doesn't bode well for the 49ers in 2014. This has the earmarks of a serious rift between Harbaugh and the front office and could become a colossal distraction.
