I would say it's easier for obama to have good ratings because he was elected by a desperate populace, one that really needs him to be great. He isn't great and he won't be great. But people are hanging onto that hope. With Bush everything was fine so they could give him a thumbs down and go on with their lives; giving obama a thumbs down means . . . oh sh!t.

IMO if Obama had been elected in 2000 his approval rating would have been around 70% hes more charismatic than Bush.

If Bush had taken ove last Jan. he would be doing No better tha Obama maybe worse.

Yes, Jeb was technically wrong in his claim that Obama is less popular than Bush was at the same point in his presidency, the difference between the two is not statistically significant. Still, I read that Carlson interview and I thought he (Bush) made some pretty good points, even going so far as to admit his brother's prescription drug benefit program was a mistake. He does some cheerleading for his bro, but I thought he showed himself to be a bright, thoughtful guy. I particularly liked this quote, I think it speaks to a problem I see with how some Republican politicians are operating:

"I think it's okay to have a deeper understanding of things. I think it's okay to talk in three-syllable words. The world we're living in is incredibly complex. And simplifying things to the point where you're misunderstanding where we are as a nation isn't going to help people overcome their fears or give them hope that they can achieve great things. I don't get inspired by shameless populism."

A return to looking at candidates with smarts and ideas rather than those that can field dress a moose or have a recipe for squirrel would be a welcome change IMO.

Obama would have had the Enron collapse leading into a recession and the the final results of a disputed election book ending 2001 dragging down his approval ratings as Bush had.

I started to read Jeb's thoughts and didn't get past "had he said what he was going to do as a candidate".
The thread essentially compares W's candidacy to Obama's with a "if we had only known".
George Bush the candidate: I am going to bring Democracy to the Mideast with a preemptive strike on Iraq. I will then suspend Habeas Corpus, Break the articles of the Geneva Convention, order illegal wiretaps, and torture suspects.
    Good one, Jeb.
