Those silly Japanese. They actually believe that humans contribute to global warming and want to do something about it. Imagine, being more concerned with the global environment than with money. They'd make bad Republicans.

(AP) Japan hopes to slash greenhouse gas emissions and fight global warming with a revolutionary plan to pump carbon dioxide into underground storage reservoirs instead of releasing it into the atmosphere, an official said Monday.

The proposal aims to bury 200 million tons of carbon dioxide a year by 2020, cutting the country's emissions by one-sixth, said Masahiro Nishio, an official at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Introduced last month, the plan is still under study.

Underground storage of carbon dioxide underlines the new urgency felt by industrialized countries trying to rein in the effects of global warming. But capturing carbon dioxide from factory emissions and pressurizing it into liquid form, scientists can inject it into underground aquifers, gas fields or gaps between rock strata, safely keeping it out of the air.

Japan currently has no commercial underground carbon dioxide storage operations, Nishio said. But the proposed project would dwarf similar operations underway in Norway, Canada and Algeria, each of which pump about 1 million tons a year.

The Japanese also don't drive around in SUV's getting 8mpg...in fact no one else does just the US. Good for them for coming up with an out of the box solution.

What SUVs get 8 MPG ? Or are you confusing them with RVs ? My SUV gets low 20s in MPG - and don't worry, we don't drive it that much.

Ok you got me the Expedition has raised it's fuel mileage up to 14mpg...it was 8 the first year. I think they raised the bar to 12 or 14 as a minimum the last few years.

That is a good link and it shows that most SUVs, most of the culprits are the 4 WD, get decent gas mileage. Certainly nothing like 8. The median seems to be around 16 city/21 highway. While this may not be good, it's far from the catastrophe that people lump all SUVs in. RVs and Trucks are a far bigger problem.
