If he signs with them and either Lloyd, Welker get injured, Deion Branch has to be a must get. Edelman and Slater are not good backup wideouts.

Edleman can do some things out there that not many WR's can, he's got some skills. Why the pats don't use him more is beyond me. Just like it was obvious to me they should of used Ridley more last year.

I'd be really disappointed if he wasn't really hurt or was just bumped and bruised and they cut him. The Pats have more tape than I'll ever see, and certainly know a bazillion times more than I know about the game, but I know I'd feel better with the team having one more receiver that Brady knows and already has chemistry with. Hopefully Jabar is just seeing what other options are there in case the Pats don't come calling in the near future. If not him, Branch would be fine, to.

As I said earlier in the week, it is a good business decision for Gaffney to sign with another team, be on a 53-man roster Game 1 if he can, and guarantee himself a year's salary. This might be more attractive than to wait for the weekly phone call from the patriots.

The patriots can sign Gaffney in the next couple of days, or they can pass on the opportunity. If we wait, one should judge that Gaffney just isn't as important to the team than the value of keeping one the current players on the 53 another week or two instead of on the Practice squad.

This isn't about Gaffney not being quite ready to play. He certainly could be inactive for a couple of weeks with Rivera on the Practice Squad. Gaffney is apparently not good enough to make our team.

Could he not be injured and working out? The dolphins key leverage would be giving him a week 1 roster spot guaranteeing his salary. Before doing this they would need to know more about the extent of the injury.

This also might just be some leveraging by his and Stallworth's agent to get New England's attention.

Remind yourself who that agent is and what his reputation entails.

Why? Because last year Branch and Welker were both better and the simple fact is that Gronk and Hernandez, when healthy, are better than Edelman. It's been said since we drafted them in 2010, the 3rd WR role is almost completely redundant...Edelman still won't see much of the field bar any injuries and even after that, I expect Salas to beat out Edelman at the #3 spot...you overrate his skill set.

If he were good enough to be used more, then he would have beaten out competition...which he hasn't.

As for Ridley, it's just as obvious why he wasn't used more. He had rookie fundamental flaws in his running style, something Green-Ellis didn't have. On top of that, we don't know how the lockout affected Ridley's learning curve.

It was reported the end of last week that Gaffney said that he was one to two weeks away from being healthy. The Dolphins might have decided that they are willing to work him out without him being 100%.

There are many reports that Gaffney was less than spectacular this summer. So there is a chance that the Pats don't want him back, but personally, I think Gaffney is keeping his options open right now.

I'm saying Edleman should be used more, I'm not suggesting he's better then Welker, Gronk or Hernandez, not sure where you got that from? And he very well may have been better then Branch down the stretch if he was given the chance.

As for Ridley please explain these "fundamental rookie flaws" it's the first I've ever heard of them. If your talking about the fumbles then your over-reacting. Also just an FYI your guy Salas who is going to beat out Edelman had the same amount of fumbles as Ridley last year and Salas only touched the ball 27 times. Also Cam Newton and Andy Dalton tell me that the lack of offseason is just an exuse for every player who didn't play well.

If healthy, Gaffney is a plus for the team, due to his system knowledge and bond with Brady.
Sure would rather have someone who's done it here before than not. IBBIT, but the method employs occasional anxiety. I'm glad coach knows what he's doing.

I'm not sure how you expected Edelman to produce something with more playing time when he produced next to nothing in the playing time he got.
He played roughly 140 snaps and had 4 catches and 34 receiving yards.
Those numbers would add up to about 23/195 if given the number of snaps Branch produced 51/702 with. In other words Branch produced more than 350% as many yards per snap played as Edelman.
Even 85 produced 15/276 in less than double the snaps Edelman got his 4/34 with.
So, 85 produced about 4 times as many yards per snap as Edelman.
Explain to me how Edelman playing more would have been better?
He had plenty of opportunity and produced almost nothing.

Well what you actually aid in your post was 'why the Pats don't use him more is beyond me'. So I explained why, and my opinions on why they will continue to not use his services more barring significant injury. If you're saying he should be used more, then you need to counter my argument...and for that to happen he has to be pushing Lloyd, Welker and also Salas now...who I think has a better skill set.

Fundamental rookie flaws included a poor pad level, holding the ball in the wrong arm and not overing up. The reason he fumbled those two times. He also spun into hits on a couple of occasions. All those factors combined meant he was a walking njury waiting to happen as well as a potential liability with the ball.

His burst, speed and vision were never issues of course. These issues WERE talked about so I don't know how on earth it's the first you've heard of them...they've been mentioned on this foum too. I personally don't thnk he had a fumble issue...but the potential issue was there and before he even fumbled I was arguing his running style was a potential problem.

So no, I'm not referring to the fumbles...I'm more referring to his running style which could have meant more fumbles down the line. So really bringing Salas into a debate about RBs is a tad pointless, considering I wasn't even calling him out on those.

As for the growth of p,ayers, everyone is different. Some are more NFL rady than others. Some were affected by the lockout more than others.

actually, Andy, he's making only one assumption. That's if Gaffney is working out in Miami he isn't as "injured" as most of us assumed. Because if he isn't injured, MG's comment that he simply wasn't good enough to make the team is probably right. UNLESS, of course, you are making the assumption that BB has suddenly decided at this stage of his career to let the better players go and keep the bad ones.

In reality there could be a lot of logical reasons why BB decided to let Gaffney go (if in fact that is what is happening). Among them being: no special teams, lost a step, not as committed as the last time, etc. And until the Pats are on Hard Knocks, we aren't going to know the real reasons.

So in THAT vein, I guess we are all always making 'assumptions'

Well Ridley's "Fundamental Rookie Flaws" still got him a 5.1 ypc and he was still the most explosive player at the RB spot. Just an FYI... Barry Sanders spun into some hits as well, it happens.

As far as Edleman goes when I say he should be used more, I'm talking like 3-5 touches a game. Obviously he's not at the top of the pecking order, but you would think with all the attention getting paid to the TE's, Welker (and this year Lloyd), that he would be able to take advantage of some situations. If he does take advantage of those situations then it just gives other teams one more thing to think about and defend.

As far as Andy posting that Edelman had 140 snaps... I wouldn't of guessed it was that high. So maybe he doesn't need to be out there more, but maybe they just need to give him some more oppurtunities to showcase what he can do. All I'm saying is put the ball in his hands. Hopefully McDaniels is a little more creative then BOB.

Dazzling us with your fancy footwork, eh Andy. Lets take a closer look at those numbers. And lets make the 'assumption' that they are correct.

If in fact Edelman had around 140 snaps at WR. That would mean he'd have been a WR 7 plays a game. And in those 7 plays I guarantee he was the last option on 90% of them. Please explain how given that info you'd expect any receiver to accumulate any significant production. Your figures mean nothing when when you put them into the context of the game. And again that assumes your snap figures are correct in the first place.

BTW- if you are correct about Edelman. That he is worse than a JAG and bombs out as a receiver (which I admit is a distinct possibility). Then BB by his own actions just committed a major mistake in thinking Julian has much more value as a receiver than you do. Why is it that I'm more comfortable being on BB's side of this issue than yours?
