Adversaries take a less charitable view. Eric Winston, an offensive tackle for the Bengals and president of the NFL Players Association, says the NFL is simply too popular to screw up, and that its recent success has come in spite of Goodell's leadership, not because of it: "You could be the worst bartender at spring break, but you'd still be killing it."

Won't happen unless owners want him out..and i feel most owners like him

...tap tap tap.... Is there an echo in here??? Hello? hello?...

A couple of us have been saying things like that about Goodell since the start. This is a guy who doesn't belong in the top spot, and he's been showing that to everyone since day one. It's sad that it's taken all this time for a (relatively) big time media outlet to finally start up the bandwagon, and it's shameful that this assclown is likely to survive the brutal season the NFL has had this year.

But that shows you just how strong the NFL brand is. This guy is failing time and again, and the league is still signing 9 billion dollars worth of contracts.

Well, there is this little problem....

At this point the only reason I can even dream he has a job is to act as a lightning rod absorbing criticism that might go elsewhere.

Not that I think that's true, but holy cow- everybody hates him. He's supposed to be the face of the league and the world thinks he's both incompetent and stupid. How is it not an epic failure to put up one of the most hated and distrusted public figures in America as the face of your business?

And we haven't even got to how he has handled basically everything. I'm trying to think of one good thing he's done. It's like the Midas touch, except with **** instead of gold.

And don't let the door hit you on the way out

It was time when he botched Spygate. He's been completely inept from day one and rules oversight and investigations and communications with the media and delivering sanctions have ALL suffered under his stewardship.

Curran (or PFT, or whoever said it first) hit the nail on the head: if the league knew about deflated footballs prior to the AFCCG under Tagliabue this 'scandal' never would have seen the light of day, it would've been handled in-house, quietly, with some stern words, a warning about not doing it during the AFCCG, an investigation into why/how, and possible rules changes if they determined it was atmospheric conditions causing an artificial deflation.

Spygate was a GIANT warning sign that Goodell was over his head in running the league. He botched that so, so bad. Owners care about their bottom line and it's soared during Goodell's stewardship, but my contention is they'd be right where they are now--from a CBA and revenue standpoint--with a different commissioner but light-years ahead in terms of media relations and the perception of the league.

Goodell was hired by the owners. You can't have one owner being the leader of the NFL. Goodell is a puppet that they manipulate, and have, to absorb the BS. All owners are buddy buddy with him. Kraft is just too public about it. He really should learn, and realize he's too old and lay low

Goodell is that 3 day old fish that you bought 6 months ago. You can't even get close enough to it to throw it out.

Baseball had Selig

At least Selig's hung it up. Time for Goodell to follow suit.

If he is REALLY allowing these supposed leaks to ESPN the drama queens of the sports world, then yes, he needs to go.

should've been fired over the replacement ref debacle.

or the ray rice debacle.

and now this debacle right before the Super Bowl.

"It's also an open secret in league circles that some owners, especially Woody Johnson of the Jets, resent the preferential treatment Goodell is perceived to extend to his inner circle. (As the football world waits for the commissioner's decision on whether to punish the Patriots for Deflategate, many are wondering how his relationship with Kraft will affect Goodell's ruling.)"

This leads me to believe more and more that deflategate was started by his underling Kensil and not by Goodell himself. It's as if Woody Johnson set up two things to happen, one is to discredit Kraft and the Pats and two is to provide ammunition to oust the commissioner.

However you feel about Goodell, it certainly paints a picture of ineffective leadership at the moment.

The majority of owners support Goodell. As long as NFL franchises are hugely successful, this will (and SHOULD) continue.

Of course, one of Goodell's strongest supporters is Kraft. It is somewhat ironic that patriot fans keep calling for Goodell's ouster. They might just as well be suggesting that Kraft sell the team, since these fans are so unhappy with the decisions made by this ownership.
