Result: the Dow now up 60 points on the day. So much for being a "poison pill", on Ruperts part. Hey, doesn't Rupert own that bad "Fox News" ??!!

In a decidedly downbeat report by CNBC (competitors of Rupert's News Corp., wouldn't you know), it sounds like the world has come to an end:

CNBC's Faber: News Corp. to Succeed In Buying Dow Jones

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. will succeed in its months-long effort to acquire Dow Jones, publisher of the Wall Street Journal, CNBC's David Faber reported.

A definitive agreement is expected as early as tonight, Faber said, citing people familiar with the situation.

The accord would end months of wrangling among the Bancroft family, which controls Dow Jones
    DJ

Many members had opposed the $5 billion offer, which became public on May 1, fearing Murdoch would interfere with the Journal's editorial independence. But monetary issues appeared to have caused many family members to switch their votes.

"They suddenly realized that if they were to turn down this deal, they would also be on the hook for paying all those fees to their advisers," Faber said, including Merrill Lynch and the law firm of Wachtel Lipton. "It adds up to a big number. So they started to change their minds."

Family members decided that if they approved the deal, they could try to get Murdoch to cover the fees, Faber said. And that resulted in a large enough percentage of Bancrofts favoring the deal.

The Wall Street Journal was one of the best of the conservative newspapers. One could read it for a fair journalism from a conservative perspective. Let's hope Murdoch doesn't do to the Journal what he did to the Times of London.

Oh, he will. In my past life in the mutual funds industry the WSJ was required reading (it would be on our desks each morning), it was a great paper and I always enjoyed reading it. Me thinks Wall Street is going to have to find another paper to report on them.

I hope you really don't think the Dow Jones Industrial Average is the same thing as Dow Jones stock. If you do, that's pretty funny.

In other business new, yesterday General Motors announced $891 million in 2nd quarter net income.

Fogbuster was very happy for him and says that, now, maybe he and Mrs. Motors can retire from the military!

I'm sure she's a bright kid. Maybe she can educate you on the difference between the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Dow Jones Company! :)

Shmes, you're a bright guy. That's why you're a mod. When's the last time the Dow Jones Company (NOT the stock exchange it owns, but the Company itself) ever went up 60 points in a DAY, let alone in two hours??

When someone -- like everybody, including me -- says "the Dow", it means the Dow Jones Industrials Market, the "Big Board" of the New York Stock Exchange. If one talks about the Dow Company, we say simply, "Dow"; NOT "the Dow".

See, I knew you knew that!

So why is your post's subject "It's official: Rupert takes over the Dow"? Surely he didn't buy the Dow Jones Industrials Market.

Then you go onto say: "Result: the Dow now up 60 points". Sure sounds like you're talking about the same Dow!

You got caught not knowing what you're talking about, and now you're backtracking. Remember, God's watching.

Pujo, I'm gonna say this r-e-a-l s-l-o-w because that is the only way you apparently can understand things: the Dow Jones Industrials Market is a part of the Dow Company. So, when referring to the Company (Dow), it is perfectly proper to say "the Dow", meaning the Company which owns "the Dow" Market. Thus, saying Rupert took over "the Dow" means he took over the Dow Company, which happens to own "the Dow" Market. See, not so hard after all. :D

Ask your English teacher; last time I was in a Mass school they were still pretty good. Maybe not any more, though.

That explanation would have done Clinton proud.

I'm pretty sure most of them are dead, and the ones that aren't don't want to have anything to do with me.

You could post that crap in any thread. Obviously the person who made the thread cared, or they wouldn't have done it. And the people who responded cared enough to do that.

Maybe Bubba's a Fogbuster wanna be. Wouldn't be the first.

Your teachers are all dead?? Sorry to hear that. Not wanting to have anything to do with you, now that is understandable. ;)

The Dow is now the "big board of the NYSE"???????????

Ummmm......you're stepping deeper into the smelly stuff, buddy :)

The DJIA has nothing to do with the NYSE.

But keep trying, this is entertaining!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you ALWAYS this credible with the "facts" you spew?
