Many are saying that health care reform is certain to pass, and the odds certainly look good, but the official New York Times count shows the Democrats are still 9 votes short:

Democrats to Watch on the Health Care Vote - Interactive Graphic - NYTimes.com

At any rate, my guess is that the Democrats are going to win the health care reform battle.

I think when people come to realize that the only people hurt by the bill are those who can afford health insurance but don't want it, and everyone else is moderately helped, the bill will prove reasonably popular. I think it will work to the Democrats advantage in the next election and help reduce their midterm losses.

It'll be a close one. Closest thing to actually having a football game on a Sunday afternoon these days... the actual health care vote.

My understanding is there's the up/down on the Senate bill... what I don't get is whether the fixes will be through reconciliation, or a package to just send it back to the Senate with fixes (which puts us back in filibuster land.)

Regardless getting the basic package passed would be a triumph for the principle that winning the election means you get to govern, albeit a rather hamstrung instantiation of that process. If they lose, it's just the opposite: a strong statement that it's a matter of how organized the moneyed interests are in unifying the base and persuading the muddled middle to vote for change... then change their minds.

It'll either be an historic achievement -- no matter how limited -- or it'll be yet another footnote in the long sad history of a country that's afraid to let government play a role in the care of its populace.

Newsflash, the government already takes care of it's populace. What we don't have is one nice big umbrella of security for the masses. Like in nature attrition has it's virtue, it sharpens the senses.

It's striking that the same people who said "Obama will never get his party's nomination" and "Obama will never win the election" and "this healthcare bill will never pass" have now moved on to "we'll not see another democrat win an election."

Is it a case of "Eventually we've got to be right," or just plain denial?

I don't know if the healthcare bill will pass or not today. I do know that I was listening to CNN earlier and a Republican dude from Indiana was saying that "we have plans" for today's vote and when pressed by the person doing the interview as to what those plans were, he smiled and said, "You'll see." When asked if they planned on being disruptive he gave a (what Harry would call) Pelosi grin and repeated, "We've got a plan."

I do know that if the bill does pass, there will not be whole lot of "I told you so" or "HAHAHAHAHA" or rubbing of the face in it going on - there's enough empathy in the liberals to understand what it feels like to lose that the majority of them are not going to gloat - they're going to roll up their sleeves and work on making the bill better and assuring that it works as hoped/planned.

I'm pretty sure, however, based on the amount of glee shown here when anything unfortunate befalls a democrat or a liberal, that if the bill fails there'll be dancing in the streets - and in every single thread posted here.

Oh please. The enthusiasm will be extreme on both sides. To say the Democrats will be any better winners than the Republicans is silly.

I don't think so. I think if the bill gets passed that the Dems will be happy, that they will do some celebrating, yes, but I think it will be tempered with them knowing it's not the war that's been won, it's a battle and there are more battles ahead and the best thing to do is minimize this win and begin, immediately, to concentrate on a bigger picture.

I could be wrong, of course, and if so I'll be back to acknowledge it.

If they don't pass it ... many of those new ACORN voters that they brought in will feel smitten. How many of them will go back to not being involved in politics? This is a huge fear for the democrats ... how many voters they brought in vs how many they stand to lose. Will it be a net gain or loss.

This is more about how many voters they can count on than anything else. If it was really about healthcare then all the Congress people and Senate people and administration would also happily be on the new plan - we all know they will not be on it of course ... if it was so grand why will they not be on it.

HOPE and CHANGE ... :singing: :singing: :singing:

It's a disasterous day, just wait and see what happens to the deficit - oh, yeah, and the economy and jobs. It doesn't affect me much personally, I'll keep my job and insurance and I don't make $250K. However I'll be putting any investment money into my kids 529 not regular mutual funds for when the new taxes inevitably hit those at lower rates.

I think the moment it's passed, the Democrats and Republicans will swing into campaign mode. The Republicans will say it's worse than Armageddon, and try to use the courts and the media to scare people. The Democrats will present it as the second coming of Christ, and promise a whole new dawn.

In the end, I think the Republicans will overplay their hand as people start to realize the truth about health care reform: From the point of view of our day to day lives, it's not a big deal. After all, the only people who will be seriously affected are those who want health insurance, and those who don't want health insurance, which is probably something of a wash. For the rest of us there will be a few benefits and improvements but nothing very exciting.
