WASHINGTON - The groundbreaking deal in Congress to raise mile-per-gallon standards will compel the auto industry to churn out more fuel-efficient vehicles on a faster timeline than the companies wanted, though with flexibility to get the job done.

The auto industry's fleet of new cars, sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks and vans will have to average 35 mpg by 2020, according to the agreement that congressional negotiators announced late Friday. That compares with the 2008 requirement of 27.5 mpg average for cars and 22.5 mpg for light trucks. It would be first increase ordered by Congress in three decades.

Majority Democrats plan to include the requirement in broader energy legislation to be debated in the context of $90-per-barrel oil, $3-plus pump prices and growing concerns about climate change. The House plans to begin debate this week.

Huhwuh..? "Years" of $3 per gallon gas...? Are you OK...?

This is just another example of Congress pretending they're doing something about a problem when they're really doing nothing.

They must be trying to divert attention away from their crappy perfromance, this lousy democrat congress is the only thing in the country that has a lower approval than G Bush, the old skank with the shiny new teeth (Auntie Pelosi), the sniveling little weasel Harry Reid and their whole gang of grinning fools turned out to be gigantic Flops.
Good Riddance they won't survive 2008 and they themselves have destroyed themselves.
Huckabee will be your next President and the Pelosi Gang have helped him.

Whats the cost of a gallon now 12/2/2007 ?

    $3.00

What was the cost of a gallon of gas in 9/2/2005 ?

    $ 3.00

Congress tried to raise gas mileage standards in 2003..

At that time the measure was defeated ...

The government should stay the f*ck out of it. If I want to buy a 40 MPH car I will and if I want to buy a 10 MPH car I will.

How about old cars and trucks ? How about making them illegal to be consistent ? Gotta ban RVs too.

Here's some facts for your case.

In 2000 I averaged about $ 60.oo per week running my work truck......I'm in the construction trades.

In 2007 I average about $ 180.oo a week in gas cost running my work truck...

In 2000 I averaged about $500.oo a winter heating my home..

In 2007 I will average 1500.oo to heat my house...

Rise in cost a year to fuel my truck ?
SIX THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND FORTY DOLLARS

So any F'en help the gov't can offer at this point is needed.

So you can't rely on yourself to buy a more fuel efficient vehicle, but you want to force others to do so, whether they want to or not..?

    Yeah that makes sense

If it drops demand, it'll reduce the price. This measure won't help with $3.00/gallon; but It could be very helpful in extending the time it takes for gas to hit $4.00.

I think this is a good idea....

Benefits: american citizens in lowering their fuel bill and cleaner for the enviroment...

And REDUCES OUR DEMAND FOR MIDEAST OIL.

I want consistency. If we're going to legislate better gas consumption it should be on everyone. Otherwise it's just another tax on the middle class and above. Why am I biased against the poor when I want the same for everyone. If it's important for me it's important for some guy with no money too.

Drawbacks: We, as a society, once again lose our personal freedoms to live our lives how we choose.

It's a step-by-step erosion of our rights by a bunch of people that should mind their own business. It reminds me of the transfat arguments from a couple months ago. I was on somewhat of an island back then, and endured some ridicule for my beliefs that no one has the right to tell me what I can and can't eat. Of course now the same people that want to ban transfats have moved on to salt content. Sooner or later they'll move on to the things that you enjoy, and you'll wonder where the outrage is.

You know this is ''R'' vs ''D'' bullsh!t partisan standoff....

WE have a chance to lower every americans fuel consumption, and benefits go to our lessened demand of oil in the mideast....Where oil profits fuel terrorism schools , tactics and weapons and attacks....But because it's a ''D" sponsored bill it must be DEFEATED..

    Politics fvcks peoples logic up...

It should be a personal decision. If there's 40 MPH vehicles out there I can decide if I want to buy one and save money on gas. You, my friend, can stay the hell out of the decision.

That's right... because the "D's" tend to have no problem telling other people how to live their lives.
What right do you have telling me what I can or can't drive...?

I didn't say this a$s hole congress had anything to do with the price of Gas, what I was saying is they are now trying to make themselves look good by claiming they are going to fix it.

:rocker: "that's right Nem. thats what Harry said"
