Since our erstwhile friends on the right tell us that true embryonic stem cells are without any particular unique value...

Why do Italian researchers sue their government specifically for embryonic stem-cell research???

Easy the reason $$$$$$$$$ everybody wants it. If ESC were the way to go they would be awash in Vernture capital.

There are many therapies developed using no ESC, what has been developed using ESC?

Why not fund what is being results without any contoversy, as opposed to producing tumor with ESCs.

Vernture capital? Is that venture capital for furniture companies?

So why exactly are they suing the government to fund embryonic stem cell research? Why are they concerned if they could just do their research through another methodology?

Follow the story. Sounds more like they can't do their research, so they're suing.

They want government grants, money for nothing welfare for scientist. Again the question never for all the billions thrown at ESC research where are the therapies, Whereas Adult Stem cells, placental stem cell Umbilical stem cells have all produced therapies. Why you obsession with destroying embryos.

Really, no researchers want to use embryonic stem cells? Really, all legitimate research can be done w/placental stem cells or adult stem cells?

How come they want funding specifically for embryonic stem cell research?

What's in it for them, when they can get money for other kinds of stem cells?

Reasearchers have spent billions and gotten no results using ESC. Who cares about their desires?

If ESC's are such a good idea why doesn't big pharma throw some bucks at it? Perhaps there is no ROI?

If Rogaine and Viagra weren't incredibly important medical advances, why did Big Pharma throw huge $ at them?

Oh that's right. Big Pharma is not driven by medical necessity but by profit.

This is why research resulting in actual medical breakthroughs is done through government funding, rather than big pharma.

    #87 Jersey

Researchers just discovered the stem cells in the heart.
They think they can now grow heart parts with this stem cell.

So ... does every organ in the body have a stem cell?
If so then all the past uproar was needless.
if the research relieves just 1 suffering person then it's worth it.

You see a guy like Hawkings, crippled children ... we don't do enough for stem cell research.

Icy, yep, and those cells are specialized once you're an adult... my understanding is that there is more "bang for the buck" in embryonic stem cells. Of course the research (at least in this country) was stifled for years for religious reasons.

Researchers elsewhere have found a way to revert adult stem cells back to the embryonic version (i.e., the kind with the potential to become any cell.) Naturally, this is hailed as mooting the entire scientific debate.

The difficulty with this approach is that to do it, you have to insert an oncogene into the adult cell - i.e., a cancer-causing gene.

Wanna be the first human trial of a therapy that cures your ALS... but ummm, does it with a faux-embryonic cell produced by inserting a carcinogen?

The point is not to choke off some avenues of research, just in case the adult stem cell you revert back has to cause cancer to get the job done.
