Is this secondary going to cost us another shot at SB(merged) glory?

Now yes i know it's the great Peyton Manning that tore them up today but it's not just really Peyton is it?

It's Locker, Kolb, Fitzpatrick, Flacco (we all know he ain't all that) and other not so great QB's that literally tear this secondary to shreds every week.

It's like a broken record, 3rd and long surely the Pats D gets the 3 and out but oh no Mccourty and Chung forget how to turn around and how to play corner by giving up a 30+ yard pass or a stupid PI penalty.

Honestly that is an average list of QB's i mentioned and without the immense effort of that D Line and our bruising LB's getting strips the secondary would be made to look even worse than it already has been.

Dennard is seriously the only guy i can say i have faith in so far this season and that's just after 1 game! Mccourty playing well once every 3/4 weeks is not going to cut it i'm afraid

A bit worried that just like Eli proved, when we need our secondary to step up the most they will let down.

Someone please reassure me otherwise and give me reason to believe that they won't.

You've clearly already made up your mind so what is the point of trying to reassure you otherwise..

This is the modern NFL; if you're leaning on your 2ndary to save a game you've already lost 90% of the time. This isn't a Pats specific thing. If you don't recall in the SB the Pats had a wide open receiver that would've let them all but end the game. You either need a large lead at the end of the game or your offense needs to keep punching. Luckily for the Pats they had a large lead this game.

I've never seen a group of CBs turn to look for the ball less than this crop.

What the **** are the coaches teaching them in practice?

I would be very interested to hear/read Belichick's analysis of Patrick Chung.

He's the one giving me the most pause right now. He's not even hitting at this point.

Good point but there are alot of D's out there that don't let average QB's walk all over them on a weekly basis.

I got nothing wrong with Peyton throwing all over us because it's Peyton for gods sake and Brady does the same every week to other D's and we love him for it, but when you talk about Fitzpatrick and Locker making your secondary look like mince meat it's concerning

An improved pass rush will offset the weakness of the secondary

You can blame the Corners as Safeties all day long but it takes two to tango.

I don't care if you are Joe Montana or Mark Sanchez....if your front 7 gives you 4 or more seconds to pass, you will find someone open.

Our Pass Rush will need to improve, especially against good OLs just as much as the secondary needs to cover better.

I'm VERY optimistic about this team but this secondary just terrifies me.
We could deny it all we want, but anyone on this forum who says they don't hold their breath everytime they see a quarterback (any quarterback) lob up a bomb is either crazy or full of it.

I hate the way our corners and safety's seem to cover the deep ball - by basically mauling the receiver.

Every time I see the ball go in the air I just wait for the flag and if one doesn't hit the grass I breath a sigh of relief. You know what i'm talking about.

These guys need to get better at playing the ball.

All of our strengths could be for nothing is *insert quarterback here* is just going to be able to throw up deep bombs every time they're down or their backs are against the wall on the scoreboard.

I knew we were going to handle Denver but there's better teams out there than the Broncos and Manning isn't the only one who can throw the ball down the field.

This seems like a relevant time to post this quote. It's from AllWorldTE over at Patriots Planet. He knows his stuff, as you'll be able to tell from reading this.

the Pats had some misplays on defense today...guess what,so did the Broncos

    Manning...7 for 13 on 3rd down

    Brady...11 for 17

I don't understand what is bothering you so much that you'd voice a complaint about the Pats secondary being shredded on 3rd down by the great Peyton when Brady shredded the Denver D at a higher rate.

    Manning 53.8 % 3rd down completion rate

    Brady 64.7% 3rd down completion

I guess what you want is the other team to not have ANY third down completions and the Pats to have 90% every game...

Try Madden....real world, the NFL is a passing league...points scored is the bench mark

Last year, despite the massive pile of suck that was the New England Patriots secondary, the final three games of the season saw the Patriots give up

    20
    21

This year, while I'm seeing a lot of problems back there, I'm also seeing some positive signs. Dennard looked as if he might belong, instead of completely lost. Wilson looks as if he'll be at least competitive for the S2 spot, and he and Gregory are at least upgrades over the dross from last season. McCourty, while still sucking far too often and remaining seemingly genetically incapable of making decent plays on the ball about 98% of the time, is also showing signs that he might get his head out of his ass before the season's end.

As for Chung, he's solid in the run game. In the passing game.... I've got nothing for you.

Patriots fans are concerned about the lousy Patriots secondary because they are Patriots fans. They're not going to worry about the Broncos secondary sucking.

Pass rush hasn't been great but Chandler has. He gets held all the time and the bullsh1t refs don't call anything but that's another discussion anyway.

While you say it's two to tango the front does their end of the bargain by stopping the run. We stop elite backs getting any yards with regularity because of how strong our D line and LB's are, the least the secondary could do is not waste the front's effort of getting to 3rd and long by giving up HUGE plays most of the time.

I disagree with most of this. If the Pats had a behemoth deep threat receiver (like most of the teams you mentioned), we would be making opposing secondaries look a hell of a lot worse that ours has. And I think Manning played great today--you can only do so much against him when he's in the zone.

Agree with your thoughts on Chung and McCourty for the most part. (although I think McCourty was better than most people are saying, both this week and last). But the good news is aht there are some real simple solutions to the problems you brought up: Replace McCourty with Dennand and move DM to safety (for now). Take Chung off the field in obvious passing situations and replace him with McCourtey, Dowling, Wilson, or someone else who is better in coverage. This doesn't strike me as rocket science after what I saw today.
