Is there another drummer who is even half as good as Neil Peart?

Sorry; I forgot to clarify that I meant living ones. For originality, Bonham was unbeatable. RIP, Jon.

I like Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater the best myself. I don't know what all the "experts" will say but Portnoy is the guy I like listening to the most.

Not to argue here because music is so objective, but as a drummer, these "speed drumming" deamons do nothing for me.

Sure there's technical prowess but the whole thing about drumming - to me anyway - is knowing when NOT to play.

That sounds strange to a lot of people but its the toughest thing for a drummer to learn - the slightest difference of a backbeat here or there, or working in the slightest funkiest delay is what strikes me as "true" drumming prowess.

I think the "mistakes" of many speed drummers get covered up in the shere volume of what they do

I prefer something a little more challenging when looking for the "best" drummers - Kenwood Denard has one of my favorite drum solos is off of Maceo Parker's "Life on Planet Groove" - the drum/sax solo in "Shake Everything You Got" is outta hand and I'd question whether some of the speed demons could pull it off. (Great album by the way - it has all the JB Horns on it - i.e. James Brown's Horn Section for those who aren't familiar - you're losing out if you've never checked them out.)

For a sample - (but sadly not the drum solo) see

I also like Kenwood's stuff when playing with Sting back in his first Jazz Incarnation back in '85 or so with "Bring on the Night"

Another guy who seems to get overlooked by many younguns is Art Blakey - who's drumming was both the backbone and main dish - so many would look at him and say what he did was nothing, in part because he makes it look so effortless - even as he approached his 70s - but man, the guy is basicly an unsung pioneer of all the hip hop music kids like today and they've never even heard of him Lots of good stuff out there of him...

Carter Beauford is also someone who "gets it" that it's all about when you DON'T play, not when you do, that sets great drummers apart from the good, and again makes it look completely effortless

He and Victor Wooten who's just about a drummer on the bass himself sometimes play together as well

I will go along with John Bonham, who as a drummer in a blues band could both play fast and funky, still knowing when not to play

But guys like Carl Palmer, Neil Pert etc just don't do anything for me on an emotional musical level even though I can appreciate their technical prowess
