I have wondered this for a while. He is a very good football player but is he a good match for this scheme? Vilma had to shuffle out of a similar system with the Jets before he found any success in the middle of the Saints 4-3.

The Patriots ask a lot out of there ILBs, take on guards on one play and run with a TE on the next.

Hopefully Mayo can be the Bruschi and Spikes be the Ted Johnson. Bruschi wasn't as fast as Mayo but was much better at getting off blocks and had very good instincts in the passing game. It is not fair to compare Mayo to Bruschi but as a top 10 pick he certainly has high expectations to live up to.

Give him time, it's not an overnight transition.

    Disable Jersey

Didn't Bruschi take a few years to develop? He did.

The guy was DROY. He was injured last year. He has had an up and down preseason, but that could be a product of a vanilla defense and the fact the guy in front of him are not Ty Warren. Shouldn't we wait until the season starts before we decide he isn't suited for this defense?

He did well in his first year because they kept it simple for him.

Now as they unveil more sophistication, the kid may not be picking it up.
Is he a dum dum? Hes having trouble and getting fooled a little too much, like in last years playoff game vs. Balt.

As the previous poster pointed out Tedy took 3 seasons to emerge. Remember weatching him during the Pete Carroll era? It took him a while also....

Haven't been impressed with Mayo so far. Much more impressed with Spikes.

Why do that when you can jump to conclusions prematurely?

I used up all my premature conclusion jumping by labeling Ron Brace and Jermaine Cunningham a couple of more second round busts ala Chad Jackson. Brace has no heart and lacks conditioning. Cunningham is made of glass. Don't have time to jump to conclusions with Mayo just yet.

Just remember, some of our hallowed ILBs played behind Seymour, Ty Warren, Ted Washington, Wilfork, and they had McGinest and Vrabel flanking them.

That is a very good point.

I think Mayo is destined to be good but not great. Remember, most had Mayo as a slight reach at 10. Even in his first year, i didn't think he had any wow plays, like a Patrick Willis.

He's like the Ty Warren of MLBs. Good, solid player

433 tackels 2.5 sacks and 6 INT's and 1 TD in 3.5 years with the jets says he was a very good player for the jets him and mangini, just did not like each other and the fact that David Harris, had a great rookie season will Vilma, was injuried made it easy for the JETS to trade him with he's contract comeing up

so many peopel are down on Mayo, cause he won DROY and then did not turn into patrick willis, or ray lewis, the next year so now he dose not fit the system :confused2:

So why the **** did we trade up to pick him at 10 then? Willis was taken at 11, btw. You don't want to take "good" players with the 10th overall pick.

Why do people here talk about Willis as if guys like him grow on trees or something. Noone else in the league makes plays like "a" Patrick Willis.

You're aware that the strength of any given draft class varies from year to year, aren't you?

Isn't it a bit early to be judging Mayo's ceiling as a player?

Willis was taken from the "horrible" 2007 draft class.

But there are guys who flash. I agree, no-one is as consistant as him. He's the best.

And it's just what happens. I think they both picked with the 10th pick, people are going to compare.
