I don't know about what you guys think, but overall talent in the NFL says Donte is a better player, but on this team its a no brainer - Jabar Gaffney is our 3rd best receiver and has moved up the ladder right behind Moss and Welker - Jabar is a better player in a Pats uniform than Stallworth who IMO drops too many catches or is out of sinch when he does get a shot at a play,Jabar rarily does make a mistake like that.

    Your thoughts?

The team has depth. D E P T H, depth. Either one can be effective when they're called for in a play. Assigning numbers to them is something that doesn't translate in Patriots' World.

All I am saying is for big plays this year when you look at 3rd and 4th WRs Gaffney has produced more - Is he a better talent than Donte? - no
Has he done more this season in productivity and in crucial situations? -yes

They have different skills. I'm not sure how Stallworth is covered, but it appears Gaffney gets single coverage and takes advantage of that. They seem to be using Stallworth now mostly on shorter passes hoping he'll get good YAC. I'm kinda glad we have both. It does make it near impossible to get Washington, Jackson and Troy on the field though. Strange how in some years the Patriots were starving for #3 and #4 Wr's and now they have 7.

Donte is a YAC receiver, Gaffney is a possession receiver with good hands and a knack for precise routes. Again, while I understand your original post, I believe the team takes full advantage of each player's unique skills.

    Gaffney was huge tonight.

I don't think it has anything to do with Stallworth. I think the coaches recognized that Gaffney has been making plays all season even though he's had three excellent WR's ahead of him.

Yes, Stallworth didn't play in the first two series, but early in the game we ran a more conservative offense. This is not a new situation - where a regular starter, even if he isn't really injured, doesn't play as much as normal. AD hardly played against the Colts and Vrabel didn't see much action against the Bills in Buffalo. Maroney has been dealing with it all season. This 53 man roster just oozes talent. Unfortunately it's a penalty if you have more than 11 players out on the field during play.

Yup. Ya know Stallworth's balance still amazes me. He is so awesome after the catch and very hard to bring down.

    #32 Jersey

Jabar Gaffney had a good, ney great, game today but it is nothing more than that.

Stallworth is still ahead of Gaffney in every respect.

Even in the game against Baltimore, Stallworth had more looks, catches, and yards but we overlook that because the ONLY catch that Gaffney did make happened to be the game winning TD.

    #95 Jersey

stallworth has more big play potential
however, gaffney appears to be more reliable when called upon
they play totally different roles and i really like both guys
if i had to bet on one being back next yr it would be gaffney, as stallworth will need a major restructuring

Which one do you think the Pats would pay more money to remain a Patriot?

I have to think it's still Stallworth.

That said, I think the Pats will reach a deal with Gaffney but not with Stallworth.

Love them both. Prefer DS (those are my initials, cool) with the ball (awesome YAC) andprefer Jab to get open and make a big slot-like play.

Donte had some great blocks yesterday. He saved the lateral play from Moss by making a great block to give Randy an extra second to get the ball back to Brady. If you watch him on the back end of plays or up the field, he blocks really well. Is he the best blocking WR in the NFL? - No.
Is he a great combo of jet speed and talent who works hard even when he is not the 1st or 3rd option? - Yes.

I like both of them just the same. As a matter of fact, I've lost all confidence in Ben Watson, his hands are unbelievably shaky and he's a fumble waiting to happen. With that said, I was screaming last night to replace Watson with Gaffney and go a Pure 4-wide, Watson to me is a mistake waiting to happen, I hope the Pats use more 4 and even 5 WR sets going forward in place of Watson.

I was impressed with Chad Jackson's speed on that 2cond return, I'm hoping he can see the field in these next 3 games, especially if they're early blowouts, I know he has alot to offer.

On some of those catches Gaffney's only getting open because Stallworth, Welker, and Moss take coverage away from him, and he was sometimes being covered by what you'd consider a 3rd or 4th CB. Take Stallworth out of the game fulltime, and replace him with Gaffney.....I don't think the results will be quite as good.

Watson dropped a TD pass the other week, and he's dropped a couple of passes overall lately, but he hasn't at all had shaky hands throughout this season, and he hasn't been a fumble waiting to happen This Season, either. through about half the season Watson was among the Patriots most reliable receivers, and the only thing that slowed him down for a while was a high ankle sprain. Last year ben dropped more passes, and you could at times worry he was going to fumble, but earlier this season we had threads on this board talking about how Ben had improved in both of those areas.

Last year I was saying the Patriots should give Chad Jackson a shot at returns, and when they finally used him at returner (either the Jags or Titans last year) he looked good. This year I've again been saying NE should think about using Chad as a returner, so I was glad to see him get the chance against the Steelers, and it was nice to see him get in at least one nice return.

A lot of good points were brought up, and I agree that both players play different roles. They're both about the same size and are six year veterans, but the similarity ends there. Jab's pretty good at just about everything he does, versatile, but not "great" in any one area that I can think of. Donte, who's hands aren't great and isn't a real jumper, has more of an impact on the field. Sure, he's not going to be jumping 4 feet into the air making circus catches, but he's fast enough to run by the defense and get open. He's a great blocker and he is fantastic at gaining yards after the catch, which makes him a huge threat at the line of scrimage as well. Jab might catch some jump balls, be he doesn't threaten the two extremes of the field nearly the way Donte Does.
