Is it Sayonara for Lonie?

I agree if Lonnie is clearly better than these guys he's worth keeping. If Thomas or Mills proves his rough equal, then we're better off losing Lonnie. One thing I will say in Lonnie's defense is that he makes a lot of ST tackles considering he's the guy who snaps the ball.
According to his career stats he has zero tackles and zero assists, though like you I thought he made one or two tackles over the years. The only stat he has with ESPN.COM is two fumbles in 2003 (bad snaps I suppose).

They might not count special teams tackles. I'll check the NFL.com stats. Or just Patriots season game stats. I know I've seen him make quite a few.

LOL, yes that was Brian Kinchen in 2004 (Carolina SB).

And wasn't there a guy in between, who got hurt in his first game, necessatating Kinchen's signing?

Good long snappers are quite hard to come by in this league.

That's one of the prime reasons BB has kept the guy this long, and extended him, as well.

It's as much an art as a science.

As for those who have pointed out that a few around the league have done double duty, like Tom Tupa, my question to you is, would you want this guy quarterbacking this team? Sure, he'd have some value in a pinch, but in that case, why couldn't you just pull in a guy off the street to throw the ball? I mean, how difficult could it be? I mean, you take the snap, drop back, throw the ball, hit the guy in the chest, and then after the game go into the locker room for a beer. What????

Guys like Tupa (God love 'em!) are taken on to punt, and the other stuff is extraneous (I mean, the other stuff is there, yes, but that's not why the get and use them), although I do understand Tupa did QB at Cleveland for a spell.

So it is with Lonnie. He does one thing, and he does it very, very well. He's a specialist executing in an important spot.

You don't think flubbed snaps are important? They can literally change the momentum of a game.

Lonnie's going nowhere, trust me.

Lonnie is an outstanding long-snapper. Dave Thomas has never even done it in a game before.

Not only is Thomas a long snapper, Garrett Mills is also.

Thomas has never even done it in a college game. I don't think that qualifies him as a long snapper.

Do we know this for a fact? I find it hard to believe multiple draft guides would say "also the Longhorns long snapper" if he has no game experience.

repace mirabelli with josh bard?

Thomas would have to play for years and make perfect snap after perfect snap to be as good as Paxton. I would be very cautious about going with a new snapper especially when the team is breaking in a new kicker.
smart people learn from their own mistakes.
wise people learn from the mistakes of others.
wonder how many pitches bard will drop tonite.
paxton ain't broke. BB/SP please don't fix it.

This is what Thomas said on his conference call sat night when asked about long snapping:

"I worked on it every day in practice but I’ve never done it in a game. I think if I keep working on it, and if they really need me to do it, I could step up to the plate."

Well I certainly don't like that "if they really need me to" nonsense. What kind of positive attitude is that?

None. Sox just traded him for Mirabelli.
