We now have a long snapper in Thomas. Assuming Hochstein makes the team, we have another long snapper. Is it time to cut bait with a guy who sucks up a roster spot doing one thing?

I'm conflicted, but I think if Thomas shows in TC that he can long snap at a 99% success rate, I think Lonie's headed to Indy for a reunion.

Only if Thomas puts on about 25 lbs. Blocking isn't his strong suit.

No.

No.

No.

Lonie Paxton is one of the best at what he does.

End of discussion. PLEASE.

Lonnie Paxton is the best snapper in the league. Thomas will be inactive most games. If Lonnie were to be injured, Thomas would be activated next game.

Not in April, maybe September, but I doubt it.

Thanks for the link. My son's going to be practicing every day. He's negative five weeks old, but still.

In order:

1) Blocking isn't Lonie's strong suit either. Thomas might actually be bigger.
2&3) That's a homer statement. We don't know who the best long snapper in the league is. I hope this isn't one of those "He has three super bowl rings, he must be the best". Because then Antowain Smith and Ken Walter have to be included among the best at their positions. He plays for us, and we don't recall him (unintentionally) snapping one over somebody's head. So therefore he must be the best. He might be, he might not be. It's entirely possible that Thomas has a perfect record too. And he's faster in coverage.

3) Why would Thomas be inactive most games? If he's the long snapper, he'd be active. Lonie Paxton's active without any other responsibilities. Certainly we'd activate a long snapper who would also play on the receiving teams and backup tight end.

4) Yes, in September. They wouldn't cut Lonie until the last cuts, after Thomas gets some work in exhibition games.

I'm all for keeping Lonie if he's clearly the best long snapper on the roster right now, don't get me wrong. Then it's worth a dedicated roster spot. But if Thomas proves to be just as good, well, there's that versatility that some of us are always talking about.

Thomas would have to play for years and make perfect snap after perfect snap to be as good as Paxton. I would be very cautious about going with a new snapper especially when the team is breaking in a new kicker.

That's the perfect time to break in a new snapper.

Thanks DryHeat, this gets my vote for best post of the day. The problem I see is Lonie brings all kinds of intangibles. For example, he's great in an interview. Also, isn't he our resident snow-angel specialist since we dropped Compton?

NO. Its not. As others have said, Paxton is one of the best, if not THE BEST long snapper in the league. Thomas has not long snapped in a game situation ever.

What Thomas does is give the Pats a back-up at a position that they haven't had a back-up at.

Don't Paxton and Thomas each weigh about 260?

Thomas didn't even long-snap in college.

Poor Russ Hochstein, denied by DaBruinz. ;)

I agree mac: Paxton makes team no matter what.

Didn't they outlaw that snow angel deal?

Thomas weighs 237-247

Lonie weighs267, IIRC

God, I hope so.

Paxton (or any dedicated longsnapper) is a total waste of a roster spot. I absolutely cannot fathom people who seem to think that what he does is so special.

It isn't.

I watch tons of college football games.

I have never seen anyone flub a longsnap. Why?

It's not that hard. Any jag who practices can get it done.

To have a legit #3 TE who can also longsnap is perfect. As a #3TE they are going to be active every game anyway (think Fauria), so then that waste of a live spot that would go to Paxton can now be used for a DB or whatever.

I'm THRILLED.

BOR - If Hochstein was a legit back-up long snapper, why did the Pats go with Sean McDermott and then Brian Kinchen back during SB 38?

That's funny cause Thomas weighed in at 252 for his Pro-Day.

Paxton is 260 there abouts.
