we've seen his measurements and his physique.

does he have great upside?

is he the real deal or is he benefiting from good publicity?

what if he does very well at the combine does he go top 5? i'm sure he soldifies.

does he have great upside?

basically are we just talking about him because he's flavor of the month or is he the real deal?

Ghoulston is not happening ... they'll take the CB Jenkins before they take Ghoulston. I think they'll even trade down and take Conner or Rivers over Ghoulston.

Gholston (thats how its spelled) is a definite possibility, if the Jets don't pick him, which the Jets fans claim they will. As far as drafting Conner or Rivers, I can't see it. The drafting of linebackers by Bill has been beaten to death on this forum so I shouldn't have to explain it. I think Leodis McKelvin is a serious possibility, and maybe even Ryan Clady (but I haven't seen him play, strictly going on what i have read). I think theres only three positions we can address with our first rounders (even if we trade down) and thats a Right Tackle, DB and a pass rushing DE who could make the switch to OLB.

I think Gholston is for real. I'm not sure if he lasts to #7 though. I figure McFadden, Long, Long, Ryan and Dorsey are in some order the clear top 5. That leaves the Jets at #6 looking at Gholston, Sedric Ellis, Clady, Talib and McKelvin. Not sure who they will wind up valuing at that spot, and the picture will come to much clearer focus after the weekend is up and the combine numbers are posted. If Gholston runs in the 4.5-4.6 range, he's likely a Jet.

I think the Jets will take him. They're not going to take a cornerback for the 2nd year in a row. They're not going to take a quarterback, and Ryan won't be there anyway. They need pass rushers.

I also think the Jets are going to take him.
But don't be too disappointed.
It's hard to tell sometimes if a guy will translate to the next level.
From what I hear, Gholston is athletically gifted but raw.

Here is the career of Manny Lawson, a guy many fans clamored to draft in 2006:

Yup it's not a typo. 2.5 career sacks and an injury marred 2007.
He's been far outperformed by 2nd rounder Osi Umeniyora.

But who knows maybe the 3rd year will be a charm.
The problem is, do the Pats have 3 years to develop a raw player?

This is a Superbowl contending team nearly every year now, and Tom Brady's window is shrinking. Assuming we resign Moss, our offensive core, will have two 31 years old when the 2008 season starts.

In the last five or so years, Gholston is the college DE I've had the most confidence could come in and play OLB. Moreso than Lawson, Chris Long, Spencer, Woodley, Wimbley, or whomever. He's the real deal physically, and appears to have the mental make-up as well.

How does he compare to Gaines Adams? They are in the same draft pick range, maybe Adams a bit higher. It's hard to compare Lawson et al to Ghoslton as Gholston is a top 10 pick and Lawson was in the 20s.

isn't adams more of an end and rrely plays pass coverage? so it would seem unfair to make comparisons because ghoslton will be asked to do certain things.

how is gholston's motor so to speak?

Gholston is better against run and more versatile

Your holding the fact that he plays on the niners DL, had injuries against him? You simply can't compare Osi to him in the different situations. One guy plays on the Niners. One guy has Tuck and Strahan on the same line.

So you think he's rated higher? If so, he would be a steal at #7. And probably wouldnt be a bad ILB.

Osi was taken in 2003.

That's like asking what is worse. Having nobody good in front of you and showing nothing, or having 2 all-pros ahead of you and still managing to not only show something but show great ability sacking the QB. Lawson might still turn it around, because he's young. But the main point still remains, do the Patriots have the time to let a raw player develop when they want to win the Superbowl NOW? Brady's window isn't growing.

If Jake Long is a top prospect, then you would have to consider Gholston a top prospect as well. Gholston has owned Long the last couple times they have played each other. Gholston will tear up the combine; bench press 225 - 100 times, run in the 4.5's and get every teams attention. I think this guy is the closet thing you will get to a Shawne Merriman/DeMarcus Ware type player. That is why I want the Pats to draft him. Although many people suggest that the Jets will draft him first, I think they have to address their D-Line first. Their no point of have a good pass rush when you can't stop the run.

Gholston is a stud and he is for real. Just watch this years Michigan game. However, if he has a good combine he won't be there at 7. This guy is a physical freak. No way he gets past the Jets at 6.

I don't believe that Gholston can do 100 reps of that. Now you're just exaggerating. Your support of Gholston is noted, but I don't think he gets by the Jets... unless they do something stupid like drafting a tight end. :D

Ghoulston looked like an athletic freak in the category of Jevon Kearse. I like what I have seen of him at the college level and his ability to be moved around the line to create mismatches excites me, BUT I don't think Ghoulston is anything more than pass rushing specialist.

If the Pats draft him looking for a pass rushing specialist, than they will get exactly what they want. I don't think they can "hope" he can turn into anything more based upon what he has done in college and no matter what he does at the Combine.

CORNERBACK is the only other position I see the Pats leaning toward with this pick, but I think the Pats can find adequate talent later in the draft. With that said, if the Pats sign Zach Thomas, Seau and Bruschi come back, and Colvin isn't released, than they just don't have room for a big investment at the linebacker position. Carrying more than seven LINEBACKERS sounds a bit crazy to me when the secondary is lacking.
