You got to wonder if the season ends badly for the Patriots, and they miss the playoffs(like I predicted they would) that they should consider entertaining the prospects of trading Brady.
Now, I realize the idea of trading such a legend, much like the 49ers did with Montana, and Packers with Favre would seem like a horrible idea. And obviously it won't sit well with the fan base. But again, take a page out of those two teams book. They eventually were able to overcome the shadows of Montana and Favre to win a super bowl. So it can be done.
Look at the facts. Brady is 34, on the clear decline. To me he has maybe another three years of really good football left, but not great. He's never going to be the '07 Tom Brady again, or the super bowl winning Brady.
There's no way the Patriots are talented enough in that three year window to win another SB. I don't care what they do in the draft, they'd need to do A LOT to even be in the discussion. Even the biggest Patriots homer can admit that much. They need too much. They basically got to re-build, and doing so just wastes time with a guy like Brady anyways. He'll be ready to retire by the time the team is ready to compete.
So do you entertain the notion of trading Brady, stocking up on a ton of picks, and re-build this thing right? Or do you just hang on to a legend, at least stay competitive, but obviously kiss away any chances of another SB.
I think Belichick has the stones to trade him. As we've seen before, he's not afraid to get rid of anyone, and that includes Tommy Boy.
He will not retire a Patriot.
