If not, why does his state continue to dig itself deeper & deeper into debt. California's bond rating is now below that of Greece... the poorest member of the 16- nation euro region.

He got bailed out last year by federal tax dollars, so hasn't he learned his lesson? Arnold..."You will NOT be back!" Let us REJOICE in that fact!

Arnold may not be the brightest bulb on the tree, but California is a no win state.

When the liberals won and got prop 187 ruled unconstitutional it was only
a matter of time before California went belly up.

The answer to your question for the 5 that balanced their budgets... mineral revenues in Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, W. Virginia, and North Dakota.

Thus... large mineral resources and very low populations equalled balanced budgets in 2008... everybody else Red or Blue....was in the red for 2008.

Its not hard to figure out why...........use your god given head.

Haven't they tried doing everything but this- IOUs, fee increases, cuts across the state, and a failed attempt to raise taxes?

As much as I would love to rag on him for seeking a bailout of this magnitude for their own creation, I would hate to think of the alternative there...

There is one and only one true way for red budget states to get in the black ... expand the tax base.

You're prolly right...but what an EMBARESSMENT for the Golden state.

Personally, I'd rather we don't bail them out and let them solve their own problems. States are beginning to rely too much on the federal gov't. Ironically, the federal gov't is just as bad on a fiscal level.

The cool thing is, no matter how many states Obama bails out, he can't raise taxes on those making less than $250K because that was one of his BIGGEST campaign promises.

If he breaks THAT promise, he'll never get re-elected! Pretty cool, huh?

Funny how Massachusetts hasn't asked for a bailout yet...same goes for New Hampshire. Our budgets may not be balanced, but at least we haven't begged.

Possibly something to do with the scene in T2 where the liquid metal cop terminator slams his head w/the factory equipment repeatedly...

When I first joined here I posted an article or two, that showed how reliant states had become on federal dollars. When GW took office one of the things that he did during his budget explosion, was significantly increasing state aid. The article listed both the increase in aide, and the fact that state budgets were relying more heavily on thos dollars to function. Basically, state funding was growing, and state budgets were exploding at the same time. Massive fiscal insanity all around.

Right...and during that time of "the Great Illusion of Wealth", the federal gov't thought it could afford to step up the assistance. Now that reality has set in, we see that it can't even afford to pay it's own way!

    Not yet they haven't...

Then again unlike California the legislature in Massachusetts has a veto-proof majority in both houses and could raise every tax to whatever level they want with impunity and make it look like the people wanted the tax increases in the first place

He's just wanting to be allowed to solve our own problems :

"Instead of seeking one-time stimulus money or a bailout, the most-populous U.S. state wants the federal government to reduce mandates and waive rules stipulating expenditures on programs such as indigent health care, the official said."

Hes got more money than you so probably not. No one could deal with the mess Cali is in, when they passed legislation to limit property taxes's in the 70's something had to give.

Says the man who actually LIVES in California! I'd say that applies to the other 49 states AND the federal gov't as well.

Sorry for what was a short reply, I'm on vacation on a laptop.

CA ranks 8th in the country in revenue per capita :

The Tax Foundation - State Revenues Per Capita, Fiscal Year 2007

How dare people outside the state declare we should pay more taxes when we're already in the top ten in revenues to the state.

BF...I gotta be honest with you and say that I hope people start moving out of Cali due to your high tax rates. Your state gov't has got to learn that they can't "tax people to meet the costs, they MUST adjust the costs to fit your revenue"

That's the way everything works in this country.
