Out of the actual draftees that year (DL Kareem Brown, OL Clint Oldenburg, OLB Justin Rogers, CB Mike Richardson, RB Justise Hairston, OT Corey Hilliard, LB Oscar Lua and C/G Mike Elgin) Brown and Lua were the only ones I was somewhat high on after the draft. The rest did little to excite me.

I can't say the same about the 2009 draft - just the opposite... I look at that draft and it wouldn't surprise me if nearly everyone became a contributor.

Sounds like my madden team in keeping one or less draft picks. In fact, I don't even bother drafting, I just trade for players that I like.

I won't sugar coat it, that draft sucked but.. most of the players were late round draft picks who ended up being cut from the deepest roster in the free agency era. Plus the some of the picks were for Moss / Welker, etc.

I wasn't sold on Merriweather but seems like he will be a solid player.

That was a pretty good safety draft at the time too.

    Meriweather
    Landry
    Griffen
    Eric Weddle
    Sabby Piscitelli
    Wendling

and let's not forget binky extraordinaire....

    Reggie Nelson.

The draft didn't suck. Out of 9 actual draftees, only 1 was in the first 3 rounds, and 6 of the 9 picks were in rounds 6 and 7.

Meriweather is starting for the Patriots.
    Brown is in Jets camp
    Oldenburg is in Denver
    Rogers is in Dallas
Richardson was just cut loose by the Patriots
Hairston was in an NFL camp but got injured
I believe Hilliard is in Indianapolis

Lua and Elgin are playing Madden with everyone else

That's not bad, all things considered. Then you toss on Welker and Moss, and you call it a very successful draft weekend.

You are the easiest grader ever, come on. I could go and recite the incredible stats of each HOF candidate listed above but there is not much point, they are all below average end of roster training camp bodies.

The '06 draft was worse, when you factor in the trades made in 2007. I mentioned a few months back that it was probably the 2006 and 2007 drafts that hurt the Pats in 2008 the most.

    2006 - New England Patriots
1 21 Laurence Maroney RB Minnesota
2 36 Chad Jackson WR Florida
3 86 David Thomas TE Texas
4 106 Garrett Mills RB Tulsa
    4 118 Stephen Gostkowski K Memphis
    5 136 Ryan O'Callaghan T California
6 191 Jeremy Mincey LB Florida
    6 205 Dan Stevenson G Notre Dame
6 206 Le Kevin Smith DT Nebraska
7 229 Willie Andrews CB Baylor

Depending on how Maroney and Thomas pan out this year the 06 draft could be Belichick's worse. 07 wasn't that bad since most of the players were picked in rounds 4-7.

Am I reading this right? That the Pats had at most two players from that draft who haven't made it in the league? How many other teams had a draft that successful?

I always thought Justin Rogers could have contributed in NE, but the Cowboys grabbed him up before NE had the chance to place him on the Practice Squad. I don't know if anyone remembers, but at the time myself and others believed Rogers wouldn't make it to the practice squad, and were hoping NE would cut someone like Alexander instead. In two seasons with the Cowboys Rogers has 34 tackles, while Alexander's notched 36 tackles over five seasons. Heck, Rogers even has a more prototypical 34 LB build at 6'4" 250lbs, and has shown some versatility in Dallas playing at both inside linebacker spots, and outside Linebacker.

Kind of puts it in perspective when people are pulling their hair out over trading a 5-7th round pick.

Two separate issues. One is value, one is success.

I'm not sure what you mean, but with the talent we have, we're mostly drafting for other teams with those picks. We'll find the occasional backup, but we find those among UDFA too.

We had less talent when we got starters like Koppen and Givens.

I do think taking a shot at QB's, as we do, and WR's in the low rounds can reap rewards occasionally, because people tend to vastly overrate those in the glamour positions who thrive in high profile programs and underrate those who don't.

Nevertheless, if you need a chip for a proven player, there are always plenty more low round picks, especially with compensation picks.

That is not a horrendous draft, not a world beater either, but a thoroughly mediocre draft with one "star" in Gost. a pair of contributors in Maroney and Thomas, and a couple of rotational guys in O'Callaghan and Smith. If that is the "BAD" draft, it is not that bad compared to any of the solely Grier drafts.

Moss, Welker, Mayo, Crable and a bunch of end of the bench players. I'm fine with that.
