It has always seemed absurd that we have people in congress who can essentially serve for life, and that there is not much or a meritocracy, but more of a seniorocracy..... it is often not about talent or fresh ideas, it is about maintaining the status quo...

The purpose of any institution is to perpetuate itself...

Because no one's life, liberty or property is safe while Congress is in session and the White House is Occupied..

I think most Americans agree I know I do but they will always find a way to "scrap' term limits, they are what they are, Snakes.

I would love to see term limits but politicans on either side would never allow it. They love their power perks and pensions too much.

One concern is that it would empower the unelected bureauracy even more.

    Ted Stevens comes to mind.

We should do the same thing with Football players. Three championships and you have to retire. Its only fair, Rohan Davey never did get a fair shake from the Pats.

Same with surgeons and airline pilots. It shouldn't matter that you're 45, just getting really good at your job and your employer loves having you around. Once you hit some arbitrary point the time's up and that's that. Look at how good it worked in Logan's Run.

We have term limits. They're called elections.

I'm a huge proponent of term limits. I think they should be implemented ASAP. I would let Senators serve 3 terms, or 18 years, and let congress serve as is mentioned above, maybe a term longer. No politicians for life, in the same position. I wouldn't tie senate time toward congressional terms, and vice versa.

Which is why I abhor big government...

I favor term limits as well but then I start to think about what a politician does when not in office? I see "buddy" networks forming where a group rotates in the same members of the club to match the requirement of the law but those who are out of rotation take up jobs as political appointees, lobbyists and join a think tank. Term limits might not change the status quo as much as we'd like -- as the "career politican" simply becomes the "career public servant". Maybe cap overall involvement in each level of government? But then how do we keep the high performers that actually really need to be in their job? Tough question.

EDIT: Of course, these "buddy" networks already exist -- they'd just become more efficient in obfuscation.

Term limits won't happen. No one will cut his own throat. What we need to do is get the money out of Washington and limit the funding of campaign funding so that the job won't be so lucrati......oh wait, never mind. The SC killed that possibility...never mind...we're fu(%ed!

I stopped respecting your opinion 2 or 3 usernames ago Quiggy. So if you want a thoughtful response you'll have to explain why you think like you do.

I agree with this, but it sure would be nice to see the states call a Constitutional Convention and amend the Constitution, bypassing Congress altogether. It's never happened but it is theoretically possible. :rocker:
