Wow what a huge embarrassment for the US military. Turns out that the drone video feeds are not encrypted. At all. The software demodulates the signal, and it was probably originally intended to demodulate satellite signals - i.e., like what Sirius receivers do. Normally that's not a big deal because any half-way competent engineer understands that you take extra care to to secure communications that you don't want the world to see. As a result, insurgents can see what the drone pilots see and know where the drone is and where it's going, rendering the drones ineffective - all you need to do is find out where they're going and skedaddle.

With all the encryption options available to the US military, why didn't they just commission a hardware encryption solution? I mean, this is a lower data integrity standard than US government agencies employ to protect their data and this is in a war zone. The cards are not heavy, and they are pretty widely used in the private sector.

Not only that, the government has known about it since the 90s and done nothing about it.

And we paid how many gazillions for this???? How the military spends its money is a freaking joke... between this and paying a retired general $1600.00 per day for helping with "war games"...

Its an easy enough fix. They just need to grab Pretty Good Privacy and not use OSAMAISAPOOPYHEAD for a password and they're done.

The MIC at your service. Just amazing.

Don't worry fellas. The MIC will have a fix in no time. For the petty sum of a couple of tens of billions of dollars, they'll create the same encryption software, that your $30 wireless router uses.
