Found this on "The Inernets" and found it very thought provoking. The cool thing is that no one can attack the source! ;)

The story is made up, but still interesting and valid in my opinion. And honestly, it's PERFECT for this board!

here's the story....(no need for a link since it's not true)

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. Could not be any simpler than that. These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

    1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

    2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

    3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

    4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

    5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

GREAT, liberals will hate it, they hate any truths that don't fit their agenda.
Why would anybody want to get up in the morning and go to work knowing they have to share their pay with some guy that sits on his front stairs all day drinking and eating lobster rolls he got with his food stamps.

This fact should be taught and emphasized in jr high school and on.

And like I've said on this board a thousand time there is no such thing as government money. Never was. Its someone elses money.
Real classic liberalism would never ever be in favor big govermnent.True liberated free people would never vote for someone elses money or liberty through a big govermnent.

Are you smarter than a fifth grader?

That story is a childish piece of crap, and perhaps that's why it appeals to righties.

Its premise is based on the assumption that teamwork demotivates, which actually goes against a lot of modern business models in capitalist societies. But, worse, the story offers no logical reason to assume that people will get lazier. I could just as easily write a story where a group of capitalist students start killing each other off in order to win the competition. That would be just as valid as that story.

At any rate, the story ignores the reality that there are all sorts of incentives -- such as team spirit, school pride, a prize of some sort (last class will be cancelled if we get an A), a fun project that motivates people to do well for the joy of it, and individual pride where some individuals motivated by the challenge of learning lift the others up. Neither socialism nor Marxism preclude competitiveness.

Re: Are you smarter than a fifth grader?

I think if anyone reads the story with a little more thought, they would realize that's it's no more based on a logical progression than if I told a story about a capitalist classroom where only the best student would pass, so the students started to kill each other off. The story is a fiction with a contrived outcome that suits the writer's political aims. It has nothing to do with socialism, let alone "Obama's socialism." I'm no more insulting ths righties in the forum than the story's juvenile reasoning insults the intelligence of the lefties.

Why don't you pick apart the whole story and show everyone why it is so wrong :)

Could be that a simple story like that was just used to begin an intelligent discussion. Class time is valuable ... the shorter the story the better as it would leave more time to discussion. Like a parable in the bible ... very short stories that can elicit very lenthy and meaningful discussions.

Re: Are you smarter than a fifth grader?

I hardly know where to begin. The whole premise of the story is bogus and sophomoric in my opinion. If it said that without competition, there would be failure, that would be valid, but the moment the story starts referring to socialism and Obama socialism it loses all credibility.

First there is no such thing as Obama socialism, and socialist countries have always had incentives. The incentives were simply less than incentives in capitalist countries. There is nothing in Obama's policies that eliminates all competition. There is nothing in socialism that eliminates all competition.

Also, as I said the story seems to presume that the professor's example would result in failure, but provides no basis for believing that would be the case. I've worked for very capitalist companies where teamwork was emphasized, and completing a project on time or early resulted in equal rewards to my team. It was highly motivating. The reality is that people are not only motivated by money, and certainly people on a sports website should realize that.

That's why the story would work well in a class room ... the students could point out all the faults just like you did. If the story was perfect there would be less to discuss IMO.

It might be a fine teaching tool for kids if you took out the crap about socialism or also had a story where in a capitalist classroom students start shooting each other in order to win.

This viral email has been circulating since 1998 in various forms..

If anyone should have failed the test it should have been the professor. as that professor does not understand the difference between socialism and communism. Socialism is a system that advocates the social ownership of production and distribution., not equal distribution of resources to all citizens.(to each according to his contribution)

Communism on the other hand, advocates the principal of distribution of resources based on need rather than the level of contribution to society.(to each according to his ability, to each according to his need)

Give all the likes you like about this myth, but try to get the basic facts straight.. if we live in a "socialist society" why is my pension lower than my old boss???

I knew from the start that this thread just bugged the heck out of you for no apparent reason. It's not like you're a socialist or anything. So you can not be offended.
