    Incoming Chairmen Ready to Investigate

Democratic-Led Panels to Probe Administration's Actions in War and Counterterrorism

    By Charles Babington
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Saturday, December 16, 2006; Page A05

Incoming Democratic committee chairmen say they will hold a series of hearings and investigations early next year to build the case for their call for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and for possible action against defense contractors found to have wasted billions in federal funds.

The emerging plans to grill administration officials on the conduct of the war are part of a pledge for more aggressive congressional oversight on issues such as prewar intelligence, prisoner treatment at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, and the government's use of warrantless wiretaps.

Among the most eager incoming chairmen is Sen. Carl M. Levin (D-Mich.), a lawyer with a professor's demeanor and a prosecutor's doggedness. As head of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Levin, 72, will be his party's point man on the Iraq war and on the Democrats' call to begin withdrawing troops in the coming months.

between this, and the upcoming Libby trial, and everything else... it's looking like 2007 is shaping up to be a very dark period for the neocon "kill brown people" agenda...

These investigations will be on-going and will undoubtedly take some time. In 2008 Senate elections, there will be 12 Democrats up for re-election and 21 Republican seats.

do you know what a straw man argument is? when you're done fashioning the opinion of your opponent as you feel it, let us know, and we can get back to reality....

Ok, super... it's just that you're asserting something that most war dissentors just aren't saying... You're suggesting our rationale is constantly changing... But it's not... It IS still about lies before the war, it IS still about oil, it IS still about Cheney being "in bed" with Halliburton... One reason doesn't replace the other, they're all tied together ...

If you're going to debate the "merits" of this war with any credibility, please don't fashion our argument for us when your view of our opinion is completely false... Beat us with facts...

here's what DOES change as it suits them, however: Bush loyalists' excuses for why we invaded Iraq... and that's well-documented...

My view is somewhat different, even though, there is a huge opposition to this conflict the american folks are somewhat complacent. As long as the dow remains high, folks are getting big returns on their investments, there is no draft and this war is fought by working class folks they will not tolerate any faux pas or political harranging.

On paper the war is opposed, but until it effects the vast majority of people in their day to day lives.. there will be no support, except amongst the die hards.

There are many, many people against George Bush's war.

How many of these same people will be against George Clooney's war (Dafur) the war drums for this one are starting to grow.

Not only have you proven to be a moron dolphins fan, now you are a racist, who would of guessed another bigoted democrat on the board. You will feel very welcomed here by the other blueneck bigots.

As for you "strawman" theory, people like you have been figured out by everyone, you are the throw 2 tons of crap and see if a half pound stiucks, proven wrong you will throw more crap.

Is the libby trial going to lead to the trial of Wilson/Plame? Most likely.

This I've got to hear. What do you mean by this? Are you still in denial about what happened to who and when, or have you figured out by now that Wilson blew the whistle on the BIg Lie and got personal and professionally attacked and harassed for it.

The trial will expose alot, eventually. By then, you may have caught up to knowing what 50-70% of americans already know...that there was never any real threat from Iraq.

Wilson is suing Cheney you know. OTOH, Wilson isn't accused of doing anything illegal, unless petitioning your government is now illegal.

Come to think of it, would you prefer it that way??

I do not have a problem with congress looking into Dafur and declaring some sort of aid to rescue the people from atrocities which are occurring there. It is what the United States has always done through its history, regardless of whether the President was a Democrat or Republican. What is an outrage, is when a president and a small group of people decide that a vast region of territory and population should be part of a democracy and thus shock and awe its way to Democracy. The Saddam castle which skied above all else in Baghdad has been replaced by a new castle for Democracy. The intentions of each situation could not be more opposite.
