Justice Dept. Asked For News Site's Visitor Lists

(AP / CBS)In a case that raises questions about online journalism and privacy rights, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a formal request to an independent news site ordering it to provide details of all reader visits on a certain day.

The grand jury subpoena also required the Philadelphia-based Indymedia.us Web site "not to disclose the existence of this request" unless authorized by the Justice Department, a gag order that presents an unusual quandary for any news organization.

Or fer chriest sake, Harry, I don't have to "imagine" if "Bush had done this." Read your own article - Bush HAS done this!!

This is not, however, the first time that the Feds have focused on Indymedia -- a Web site whose authors sometimes blur the line between journalism, advocacy, and on-the-streets activism. In 2004, the Justice Department sent a grand jury subpoena asking for information about who posted lists of Republican delegates while urging they be given an unwelcome reception at the party's convention in New York City that year. A Indymedia hosting service in Texas once received a subpoena asking for server logs in relation to an investigation of an attempted murder in Italy.

Opps - for that matter, the date of the subpoena in question is January 23, 2009 - just three days after Obama took office - do you really think this was one of his first priorities -especially considering Indymedia is a far leftist organization, something you seem to feel Obama greatly favors and fawns over - or do you think it just might be a holdover from the Bush administration getting it's last licks in considering they're looking at dates from a time period (2008) when Bush was the one in charge?

Once again, it's Right vs. Left..."Oh my!"

    Bush vs. Obama..."Oh my!"

No matter what people think, both are/were presidents of the United States. Neither is more "evil" than the other. They're just different.

    THE PROBLEM IS....

People here on this board tend to view the world through the foggy (where is that guy?) lenses of their own perspective.

And THAT, my fellow Americans is very sad indeed!

If Bush did it, it's ok, if Obama did it, it's bad. No wait, if Obama did it, it's ok, and if Bush did it, it's bad. :confused2:

Whatever happened to people deciding for themselves, what's right, and what's wrong.

Just to further point out the absurdity of your thread title, Harry, not only did Bush's Justice Department also subpoena records - they went so far as to seize web servers in a foreign country.

On 7 October 2004 two Indymedia Web Servers were seized from the US-owned web hosting company Rackspace operating in London (UK), at the request of the US Justice Department, which apparently acted at the prompting of Italian and Swiss authorities.
The seizure of the servers in London shut down around 20 different Indymedia websites including Ambazonia, Uruguay, Andorra, Poland, Western Massachusetts, Nice, Nantes, Lilles, Marseille, Euskal Herria (Basque Country), Liege, East and West Vlaanderen, Antwerpen (all Belgium), Belgrade, Portugal, Prague, Galiza, Italy, Brazil, UK, and
parts of Germany Indymedia. Many are still offline; those few that have returned have suffered data loss.

This isn't even about "left vs right." It's about reading all the way through something and simple comprehension.

Personally I don't think either party should be seizing or even requesting internet records without a damn good reason being given - and even then the scope really needs to be narrowed down to something other than "give me all your records," but this constant Obama screeching and screaming that Harry and a few others keep doing is just over-the-top hatred, pure and simple.

If you're going to put an "imagine this" out there you'd better be damn sure it hasn't already happened before you make a fool out of yourself - especially if the reality is right there in your own cited article.
