If Cassel is worth 14.6 million what is Welker worth? There are alot of contracts due at the end of next year. Will Cassel's one year payout make the other players want more? Cassels won all of 11 games. Wilfork is the most important guy on defense. The Patriots have always had a team first attitude and players salaries have feel in line.Does Cassels contract change this?

no, these players play different positions, and as stated in other post, the pats dont want to pay cassel that much but if brady is unhealthy and we need to keep him that is the only amount the franchise tag will allow us to pay him and keep him. Hes not going to sign a two year contract for less money to start a couple of games until brady gets back. That wouldnt help his career as an individual.

I hope you are right. The so called experts think Cassel will stay. It makes no sense unless Brady is done as a Patriot.

I think all the players whose contracts are up are going to

want to be paid close to market value. There will be no

drastic home town discounts. Wilfork will expect a 6 million

    dollar a year contract.

Actually, on a minor point, Cassel can agree to accept as little as 120% of his 2008 salary. Of course, he'd be insane to do so, but in theory he could.

That's always been the case minus some notable exceptions like Bruschi. These guys work to get paid.

Yes, but you, I, and any other logical person knows that he would be crazy to do so, and more importantly, he will not do so.

Re: If the Pats keep Cassel and pay him 14.6 mil does it change the Pats pay structur

One of the main reason the Patriots were still in the playoff hunt after all there injuries is because they had depth at certain positions. Will they lose that depth in keeping Cassel? If they keep Cassel.

Am I crazy or are you asking variations of the same question in several threads? It's going to be very difficult to guess on what might happen if Cassel is kept or traded, since it could go either way (though I think he'll be traded). All I know is that a BB team has never put so much into one player that it takes away from the rest of the team, and we have no reason to believe that will start now.

Keeping Cassel makes no sense regardless if Brady is healthy or not. Why then are so called nfl experts saying keep Cassel.

That's your opinion only. Not that I disagree with you, but some people who understand the CAP more than I do seem to think it's not so craxy.

Because they're so-called experts. Who cares? Are you telling me that every one of them is saying Cassel won't be traded? Without looking I would guess that many so-called experts have opined that he will be traded. I would suggest it's common for "experts" (who are really just commentators in most cases) to come down on both sides of an issues either sincerely or articifically so that they have something to discuss and some points to make. That's their job.

And my job is to say thanks and I will never leave you again! That was a bad move by me. Next time I'll just take a weekend off from the board and let the crazies ban themselves. But actually I think the board is really good right now, all praise to Ian and the mods.

Re: If the Pats keep Cassel and pay him 14.6 mil does it change the Pats pay structur

i think the reason we were in the hunt so long was due to the depth at 1 particular position.....Quarterback. if we can manage to not lose many players in free agency and have money to pay our current draft picks, i think we keep cassel.

Re: If the Pats keep Cassel and pay him 14.6 mil does it change the Pats pay structur

how is keeping a proven winning QB stupid? you think 1 or 2 extra draft picks makes up for the QB position. we have no idea how healthy brady is or ever will be and you are saying trading a proven winning QB is STUPID!!!!! maybe its not fiscally possible, but your statement is absurd.

keep in mind, next year at this time if we dont trade cassel this offseason, Cassel will still be on our team. his value decreases a little, thats fine. But, we will have piece of mind that brady is healthy, if he is. plus a few extra picks. winning QBs are always in demand because the supply is low

to me, your post is one of the worst ive ever seen. you must be jjoking actually, so this is only to those people who dont undertand your sarcasm.

Re: If the Pats keep Cassel and pay him 14.6 mil does it change the Pats pay structur

If espn and other media outlets are saying the Patriots should keep Cassel regardless of Bradys health. Then the Patriots will add the players from the draft and little else. Just dont come on the message board and complain about the Patriots defense being horrible inside the red zone. Maybe Brady or Cassel can play defense.
