If the patriots win another ring with brady at the helm (or two more), what would it do for brady's legacy?

Hell, what would it do for belichicks?

    your thoughts are appreciated!

    #87 Jersey

It would increase his legacy by 33.3333% by my calculations.

There would be much more debate whether he or Montana is the GOAT. Most people will still say Montana though, if TFB wins a 5th ring that should pretty much settle it.

    1. I think it would, once and for all, distance him from Peyton Manning. How could it not? For all Peyton's statistical accolades, he's only been able to obtain one ring.

    2. It may very well remove that little black cloud that has hung over New England since losing Adam Vinateri to the Colts in free agency, SpyGate and 2007 loss to the Giants.

    3. For Belichick, I think he will solidify his spot in the top 5 NFL coaches of all time and challenge Lombari for the 3rd spot on the All Time list.

Would help us put behind spygate and make Brady #1 imo.

Had he completed the perfect season he would already be #1.

What is your top 5 and what 2 do you have above BB and VL?

I'd prefer if you changed the word "if" to "when".

It would distance him from everyone. Ditto Belichick who already has a fist full of rings counting his two as a DC (the game plan for one of which is already enshrined).

And if 18-1 and 11-5 after losing the franchise for an entire season and 14-2 and a league MVP constitute your idea of a black cloud, god help you if they ever land under a real one with actual dire consequences again once these two retire.

Basically these two have it all now. Whatever remains is icing on their cakes.

One more for Beli should cement his status as GOAT. Knoll also has four, but BB's doing it in an era of free agency and salary cap. Even now, Beli should be considered top 3 in any GOAT NFL coaching list along with Knoll and Walsh.

Brady, IMO needs at least two more to be GOAT status. Montana and Bradshaw have 4 each. But only Montana is really considered between the two when GOAT discussion is taking place. I think the main reason is that most people perceive Bradshaw to be just a spare part of the Steelers machine when they were winning. Unlike Montana, who was the main catalyst for the 49ers winning all 4 of their championships. The main reason why I think Brady needs at least two more is because the first championship he won, his role was similar to that of Bradshaw in those Steeler teams where he wasn't the main guy they called on from game to game to win. In 03 and 04, he was Joe Montana for us and has been to our success ever since. Two more SB wins would cement his status as GOAT.

    No Jersey Selected

This whole Bruins thing had me watching some Bobby Orr highlights; it occurred to me that three New England sports teams can claim to have players who are at least in the discussion for GOAT in their sports -- Orr, Russell, Brady. Baseball's a little tougher, but T Williams is very much in the discussion of greatest hitters of all. Pretty cool.

Chuck Noll with his four rings would have to be part of the discussion.

Yes he would but the comment made suggested BB may not be in the top 5 already and by winning a 4th he could fight Lomardi for 3rd.
With the 4th he passes Noll IMO. BBs 4 = Nolls 4 and BBs other accomplishments far exceed Nolls.

I think, logically and as without bias as I can muster, both Brady and BB would have to be considered the best. BB would be tied for most SB wins as a head coach, and then would have an extra two as the defensive coordinator for a team defined by its defense. It'd be him and Lombardi, I think. Lombardi may get the edge because he's a tad snugglier.

As for Brady vs Montana, I ADORE this debate. Montana had Rice and far superior defenses throughout his career, and was never relied on to produce like Brady is. Montana never had a 4000 yard season, or lead the league in TDs or yards across a full season. People cite Montana's dominant play in SBs, but ignore that almost every SB played during his era was a total embarrassment and a blowout, and that most of the ones that weren't were ones he played in. Brady is both more efficient and prolific, with more 4th Quarter comebacks, more passing titles and records, a better win percentage, and all in snowy, windy New England instead of sunny California. One more SB, and it has to be over. Brady will have him beat in every category.

That being said, I still happily concede that Montana remains the better QB historically. I hold SBs in incredibly high esteem. But Brady is going to pass him this year on the all time TD list somewhere around mid-season. When that happens, people will stop and look at how many good years Brady likely has left, and I think the discussion is going to pick up quite a bit. It might not even take a SB for Brady to pass him in some people's eyes if his numbers continue to be so vastly superior. If Brady ends his career with like 15 000 more yards, 150 more TDs, and a much higher passer rating than Montana, does one more SB win still trump that? Who's to say? Hopefully, Brady wins a few more rings and an MVP or two, and we can just skip that discussion all together. ;)

Montana was undefeated in SBs and IMO it would be extremely hard to have Brady pass him by.

Sure you could say Jerry Rice helped with Montana's successful career but then again would Jerry Rice be the GOAT WR if not for Joe?

lets not get carried away. We all thought the pats would dominate the playoffs this past season... did not turn out that way, did it?

I would be happy if brady and co win one more championship (obviously the more the merrier). But realistically speaking, i think his window is 2-3 years

Jerry Rice proved pretty conclusively that he was the greatest no matter who was throwing him the ball. He had some of his most impressive years with QBs like Young, Gannon, and Grbac tossing it.

Like I said, I think the undefeated in SB play is overrated given the era. The NFC was undefeated for like 10+ years in SBs. Competitive SBs simply did not happen back then, and the talent gap was always enormous. These days, every single SB has been an obvious struggle. If Brady ends up winning a fourth, and people cite the undefeated in SB play thing, they'd basically be punishing Brady for winning more playoff games.

1 more ring : Make people forget his subpar performances in our last 3 losses, shows he still got it in January. Puts him in the driver's seat of the GOAT discussion. And like someone else said clears out the small remaining cloud from the spygate BS.

2 more rings : Unquestioned GOAT
