I've read scattered rumors from both sides that a lot of the rank and file congresspeople don't like the deal. The Republicans think the government should stay out of the mess, while these liberals think it's wrong to help the people who caused the mess in the first place. So, it may be a case where the leadership is united and there's a revolt among the rank and file. I'd say if the leadership reaches a deal, there's at least a 60% chance that it passes. They will try to pass it very quickly and maybe in the dead of night to avoid a public reaction.

"Something" will go through in all likelyhood. The question is when and in what form.

At this moment, Senator Shelby (R) Alabama says senate will not support current version. He proposes a completely alternative plan and suggests congress should slow down.

As with everything, we'll find out sooner or later.

    Below is from a congressional aid;

*SHELBY SAYS HAD `INTERESTING MEETING' WITH PRESIDENT BUSH
*SHELBY SAYS `I DON'T THINK WE HAVE AN AGREEMENT'
*SHELBY SAYS `WE OUGHT TO LOOK AT ALTERNATIVES' TO PAULSON PLAN
*SHELBY SAYS `WE HAVEN'T GOTTEN AGREEMENT' ON RESCUE PLAN
*SHELBY SAYS THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT OPINIONS ON BAILOUT

    That could change by tomorrow.

700b will turn in to 1.4t by the time all the left handed cowboy museums are added to the bill.

Keep in mind that we'll get most if not all the money back as we did with the S&L bailout. But no matter, I don't agree with using taxpayer money to do this. Not sure of another great alternative at this point.

    OMG!

as we all have stated and agreed...this is WAY too big of an issue to pin on one person and a single body of our government. Its the fault of everyone from the people who took out zero down loans, to the lenders, to the banks that took the loans, to the lawmakers who pushed for deregulation, to Ronald Reagan, to Clinton, to Barney Frank to Phil Gramm, to John McCain to Wall Street, to dividends, to the SEC to the treasury department to construction companies, to local zoning, to credit companies....

the list goes on and on.....Its a perfect storm. Let the FBI investigate this, I'm sure that Clinton doesn't come up...

to boil this down to "congress, and Clinton" shows how unwilling some are to take in the entire picture and understand the fact that the AMERICAN CITIZENS as a whole are not to blame for this, yet we are being told we will be picking up the tab.

THATS THE ISSUE. We are being asked to pay for something that we the people are more victims of than a cause of.

I'm sure the shredders are already working. Mostly west of the Mississippi ... many crooks were finding low income people to buy houses so they could flip them when the prices increased. I'm not sure of the profit for the people but they had little to lose as many had lousy credit anyways.

Here is the thing about 'shredding' that I find to be the funniest. Don't we have congressional approval of the new FISA bill?

I KNOW we have a data mining center in the United States, because I live about 6 blocks away from it. If you ever watch an SF Giants home game, chances are you have passed by it as well. All information is gathered here. ALL OF IT. They have these transactions. The government has the evidence.

Could it be that the eavesdropping program could infact save a TON of evidence in cases like these?

Sure would hope so ... but let's face it, how many politicians are going to go down with this mess. I'm talking right down to city and town council people, not sure our federal prison system is big enough. Some are going to try to protect their party members ... I hope they can't.

The American people's problem with congress is that we each see THEM as a problem (what is it like 9% approval?) Yet we see our OWN representatives as part of the solution. I highly doubt we will see ANY congressional jail time, but I think you WILL see a lot of CEOs and high ranking bankers go down. From what I've been reading and listening to being reported about the FBIs investigation...it will take a few years, but a lot of people will be going to jail.

They are currently investigating over 20 different lenders, and banks about this crisis. We are owed at least a fair investigation, and swift justice to those who knew enough to stop this, but didn't out of greed.....and in turn, broke the law.
