Idle Thoughts: the getting what you expected edition

Watching the replay, whomever it was hit Jones from behind and away from the play. THAT should have been flagged. The Browns player hit him with some major force, not just a shove or anything minor. The blurry replay showed Jones using BOTH hands to push the Browns player away. I've not seen anyone put a video showing an actual punch (though the day is still young).

I have an issue with this because of what happened at the Bills game. NONE of the Bills players were tossed prior to the game when they CLEARLY threw punches at Pats players AND a Pats coach. That sort of thing just isn't acceptable. Yet the league sent the message that it is for one team, but not another..

Uh, hello . . .

Footballs changing pressure in cold
Jesters: Revis -tampering
Pfish: audio recordings of TB line calls
Jesters: illegal blocking on kicks
Jesters: video of pats d signals
And that is just in afce. . . .
Then start throwing in OPI calls vs rest of league and criminal penalties (susp/fines)

And you realize in the NYJFL it is ONLY about what team it is, not the ever just the "crime"

You are a little late to the party by just now coming to that realisation! ;)

It was fun to watch but I wondered why they had Slater run the ball.
So they don't automatically cover the deep ball on his side when he comes on the field, perhaps, or to setup a play where he blocks down from the same formation and the RB gets the ball.

I am not sure but I thought the officials had not even taken the field at that point. If they didn't see the infraction and there is no official replay of the infractions, I don't know if there is anyway they can enforce an ejection or a penalty. I don't think the rule book covers it. The NFL Head Office when they reviewed the game could have reasoned that if the officials were on the field, the players would have been ejected and could have issued a 1 game suspension as punishment but they choose to issue fines instead.

As for the Cyrus Jones ejection, I only saw it on TV on replay. The play went to the near sideline, Jones was watching the play fron the far sideline when he was hit when the play was almost over. I don't think Jones was even looking at the Bills player that hit him. Edelman was fined for a hit on a defenseless player in an earlier game and I see no difference in the two other then the intensity of the hit. At least in Edelman's case he was in the vicinity of the play and not way off on the other side of the field. Jones was mad and gave the Bills player a shove but then the camera moved to the near sideline to capture the end of the play and what happening between the Bills player and Jones was off camera. The ejection was announced and we see Jones being escorted to the locker room. I don't know what happened off camera but I was hoping that some one at the game could lend some light on what they saw. I didn't see any sign of protest from the Patriots so I assumed he did actually throw a punch.

It was late in the game. They didn't want to put Edelman, Amendola, Hogan, Blount, or White in a position to get hurt.. That's how I looked at it.. Especially since the game was in hand.. Also, by doing so, it gives opposing defenses one more thing to think about if they see Slater on the field..

That makes sense, I originally thought that Josh called the play that Edelman would have run but it happened to be Slater out there and to Josh that it didn't matter who was out there. Then I thought, why would they put Slater out there and it didn't make sense. Now that you mentioned that it was late in the game which I completely forgot, it makes more sense to me now.

re: cyrus jones ejection

the play occurred in the 3rd quarter at 10:59, which was at 2:57pm eastern time. at 2:59pm, tom curran sent this tweet:

at 3:00pm, mike reiss sent this tweet:

on patriots 5th quarter, zolak said that jones threw a punch.

yesterday, dont'a hightower said on weei that jones apologized to the whole team for his actions:

Dont’a Hightower on OM&F: ‘We have the best fans in the league’

“After the game when we were calling it up after Bill [Belichick] talked and Slate [Matthew Slater] brought it up, Cyrus apologized for his actions,” Hightower said. “He showed a little bit more maturity, but those are things he’s going to have to work on. We’re definitely behind him. He knows those are the things he can’t do.”

i think we can safely assume that the punch did occur.
