In some minds this will be viewed as progress, while for others it will be viewed as the end of Iceland as they will sink into the sea in five years.. either way it is interesting...

That's really amazing. A black president here, a gay woman prime minister there. It's amazing to see intolerance crumble. Let's hope it keeps happening.

Not sure I understand Icelandic politics, but apparently she was hand-picked rather than voted on? Of course, this does make the Social Democratic Alliance Party seem more progressive, but I wonder if rank-and-file voters in Iceland who have voted for an openly gay woman.

Icelanders don't care what anyone does behind closed doors. Most couples never even bother to marry. Women culturally rule daily life and are readily acepted into roles that we consider masculine. Genealogy is not based on the last name of the husband. Children are named after the father, but they take the first name or the father and add "-son" if it's a boy and "-dottir" if it's a girl, so the people there usually have different names from their siblings and parents. No one tells a woman what to do in Iceland.

If you're a guy in a bar, you are more likely to be picked up by a woman than the other way around. They are not impressed with lies and bullsh!t and especially don't care if you're an American. Most Icelandic women are absurdly good-looking and many are just smoking goddam hot. It's a truly wonderful country.

If I had known all that I would have gotten out of Cambridge years ago, I lucked out though, I married a Danish girl she has three sisters, the whole family looked like Movie Stars, even the mother.

I was there for 5 days a few years ago on a stopover to Norway. I really liked it. The people were great. It was freaking expensive, though. And we could learn from their immigration policy.

I met a guy (American) who had been there so long that he was able to learn Icelandic. I asked him why he doesn't become a citizen. He and the whole room broke out in laughter.

Not knocking the thread ... but why such obsession over political figures and their sexual preference. A gay PM ... will Johanna Sigurdardottir always be known as the gay PM or the lesbian PM? So then Obama should be labeled a black hetero male President. Perhaps it's just me. It's nice to see gays being treated like everyone else. But if they are truly to be treated like everyone else how about we take the 'gay' and 'lesbian' label away from their titles and positions. I could care less who they boink or how they boink or if they boink at all, it's a non-issue to me.

Bush was an example of what happens if Republicans keep getting elected, and frankly as the worst president in the history of the US, he's a pariah around the world, a war criminal in the eyes of many, and someone who failed to protect our jobs, our money, or our prestige. And you're worried about someone's sexual orientation? Geez, no wonder the Republican Party may be dying.

I say we elect Lisa Lampanelli as the president. She would do this country lots of good. Actually, I saw her show a couple of weeks ago and was floored. I don't know how she gets away with it but it really should give everyone hope.

True conservatives realize that someone's private lives are no one else's business, much less the government. Today's self-described "conservative" believes in as little government involvement except when it comes to sex. It's kinda wierd, if you ask me.

That's why they're always looking to shrink the government. So it'll be small enough to fit in everybody's bedroom.

She's pretty hot for 66, why do we get homely lesbvians like Ellen De Generis?
