Damn that looked like it could have hurt. He even taunted that he used his head. does helmet to helmet contact include the face cage?

Yes, I do. We have all these supposed "bad guys" and the colts are the darlings of the nfl, at least if you listen to their fans. There's a lot of whinning going on in Indy about Vince Wilfork, but they all seem to be delighted with this blatant illegal hit. Are you actually in Iraq?

yeah and the NFL is quick to hand out fines to them in a matter of days to them. Wilfolk didn't actully touch the guy he only tried to and he got 15K fine.

Actually, you can't go helmut to helmut on a receiver going for a ball or a QB, but I believe it is not an issue on a kick returner in the middle of a return. At least that's wht I heard them talking about on Sirius NFL

Re: I thought leading with your helmet was illegal.

i thought you weren't allowed to touch a qb in the helmet at all or is that only in NCAA?

i am sure that play has to be either spearing, initiating contact with the helmet or helmet t helmet

Re: I thought leading with your helmet was illegal.

i would be interested to know if it is spearing. i know that if the player was on his way to, or already on the ground, it would be spearing. (rodney is extremely good at this, but is not allowed to do it anymore). i guess the question is, does spearing apply when the player is still on his feet?

Re: I thought leading with your helmet was illegal.

That doesn't sound right. I mean, helmet to helmet and leading with your helmet are both illegal because they're inherently dangerous means of tackling or hitting. Spearing is supposed to be an automatic ejection. I don't see why the type of play being run would be a factor.

this is taken from the nfl rulebook.

    3. Fair catch interference.
    4. Illegal crackback block by offense.
    5. Piling on.
    6. Roughing the kicker.
    7. Roughing the passer.
    8. Twisting, turning, or pulling an opponent by the facemask.
    9. Unnecessary roughness.
    10. Unsportsmanlike conduct.
    11. Delay of game at start of either half.
    12. Illegal low block.
    13. A tackler using his helmet to butt, spear, or ram an opponent.
    14. Any player who uses the top of his helmet unnecessarily.

    19. Taunting.

i dont think that there is any doubt that it was a "ram"

    Yeah, our guys get fined.

Dungy when he was a player was known for these type of borderline hits. I don't know whether or not it was before he was put on his pedestal.

Re: I thought leading with your helmet was illegal.

It was helmet-to-pads, then he slid up (I think) into the face cage. He still led with his helmet, and pointed at it as he ran off the field.

I'm not going to plug it into the little "Good Team/Bad Team" machine. That hit was cool to watch, but was blatantly illegal, kickoff or no kickoff. You can't grab a guy's nuts and pull him to the ground because it's a kickoff. Show me the rule that says on kickoffs you can spear a guy.

    What BS.

Now, that being said, I think Wilfork being fined is absolutely legit, even if as part of the exercise he was saying "Oh a wise guy, eh? Nyuck nyuck nyuck."

I believe helmet to helmet is only called on quaterbacks someone said that earlier in the thread and i believe that is correct.

Re: I thought leading with your helmet was illegal.

Forget about arguing helmet to helmet, it was spearing and using the top of his helmet. Those are fifteen yard penalties, regardless of who you are hitting.
