Jason Taylor is done as far as the Pats are concerned. It appears he wants to return to Miami, and perhaps he is asking for more than the team feels he is worth.

Here's why I think the Peppers trade is alive:

    1. We've got the trade ammo to do it. But Jarvis Green has to be involved. He (and his salary) have to be involved in the trade. Package him along with one of the second rounders in 2010 to the Panthers, who are bereft a first round pick, and it should work.

    2. Assuming Jarvis is dealt, the cap space should be adequate. Didn't we clear up $2.5 mil by trading Hobbs? Jarvis is due for $5+ mil. That should handle a reasonable contract should Peppers want to play ball.

    3. If JT was in the cards, he will sign in the next day or so. I wouldn't hold my breath.

    4. Was all this masterminded and plotted from the beginning? I say "no!" BB just makes deals (obtaining the second rounders, trading off Hobbs and his salary) and puts the team in a good position. It's like in chess: put your pieces on good squares and then good things happen. If they are on bad squares, well....good luck!

Still, it takes some cooperation from Peppers. He's got to sign for a discount and Carolina has to take Jarvis. Otherwise, it doesn't work.

    I believe it will happen.

In order to trade for Peppers, BB would have to be able to talk to Fox. In order to talk to Fox, Peppers must sign the franchise tender.

I think the money can be worked out but we'd only save $2M by trading Green - so says Miguel's page.

Well that's part of the deal, of course. He has to sign the tender. He won't go anywhere else without doing that. The assumption here is that he does sign the tender in order to be traded.

Ok, let's pretend the team wants Peppers even at this point....

    Who's getting cut/traded besides Green? Remember, Carolina plays a 4-3, not a 3-4.

Re: I believe the Pats will make a big play for Peppers.

Well $2M is $2M. Every little bit helps. Hopefully, the can cobble together a reasonable deal to make it happen.

But I believe a deal will be made. I cannot believe that BB is going to leave it as it is; and I really think that Jason Taylor is out of the picture now. For the record: I have posted several times my preference for Taylor over Peppers, but that seems dead right now.

You know, I almost shot down your thread until I read your post. What I've seen them do this offseason has made me stop and think. First we trade Vrabel before his roster bonus is due. Giving us extra cap room along with removing the cap hit of Matt Cassel. Then we trade Hobbs and save another $2 million in cap room. I'm not even saying that this will happen. I'm only saying that it's PLAUSIBLE.

That being said. I'm really starting to think that Adam Schefter's report is closer to the truth than Carucci's when it come's to Peppers.

    It's a good theory though.

Re: I believe the Pats will make a big play for Peppers.

Only problem is that the Patriots likely made the deal as early as they did because they didn't want to sit on the sidelines in FA. They used up nearly the entire free space from Cassel's tag to sign Bodden, Springs, et al.

The room from Hobbs' contract will basically get eaten up by all the rookie contracts, the PS, and #52 and #53 (although there might be a bit left over).

Carolina did draft Everette Brown as well, which may make it "easier" for them to deal with Peppers. Definitely not saying that Brown is equal to Peppers, but at least they may have a viable replacement.

Taylor says he really wants to play for NE, instead of Miami--because they aren't going to move Porter back to the Strong side

Per Albert Breer. Just saw it in other Peppers thread (yeah, the 'other' one:rolleyes:) Actually, I believe it's Peppers thread #35,762 (a)

I don't think there was a link to the article though. Looks like the Taylor talk is still alive and kicking

Re: I believe the Pats will make a big play for Peppers.

Why is Taylor to the Pats dead???

I thought he was waiting until after the draft to decide but that he wanted to find a team soon after. Was there something else reported that I missed???

I would love to see Peppers and I would bet BB would too but until he signs the tender I wouldn't get too excited. I would keep an eye out the next few weeks but the longer it takes the less I would expect it.

Also I think BB is fine with what he has. He loves Mayo, Thomas is nasty and Bru is the smart vet he loves to have as is Tully, than he has a bunch of young guys fighting for a few spots with Woods as the bench mark for the talent (meaning he is the one that Crable and the other young guys have to beat out). Oh Yeah and Guyton too (who I think is best as a role player ILB).

He will always entertain way to improve of course.

Re: I believe the Pats will make a big play for Peppers.

I do think that we can structure a deal for $7M a year and have enough cap money. I also would expect Green to be part of the deal. We have $6.7M of cap money plus at $2M for Green for a total of $8.7M. I am not convinced that the $2.3M bonus to Green has been paid or is even due if he doesn't play for us.

Let us presume that the cap hit from Peppers would be $7M. That would leave us with $1.7M for the rookies (total cost will be small) and even a couple of JAG free agents for camp. There are costs that will not be there until the season starts. Those could be handled by the normal restructure or two.

    THE REAL QUESTION
If I had $7M of cap money to spend, would I spend it on Peppers or Wilfork? It would seem best to use $5M of increase cap money to extend Wilfork if we can.

Have I missed some news about Taylor post-draft? I can't find a thread, or a blog, or a news item.

Why do people continue to have trouble understanding that Peppers is NOT a DE in a 3-4 defense, but a LB?

No the real question is does Wilfork want Haynesworth money. Because if he does, his future replacement is already on the roster.

Bingo. That is the real question and it should make next offseason pretty damn interesting. Personally, I hope that Big Vince does not want Haynesworth money and stays here for the rest of his career.

With Wilfork, If he does want haynesworth money then yes we now have a replacement already on the roster, but right now the biggest need that we need was not taken care of during the draft. BB did draft players for the future, but with the signing of some free agents during the offseason he took care of our short term needs. If we do sign Peppers it will be long term. If Peppers wont sign his contract for the 16.7 then hes not in it for the money he is in it for the ring. I have a good feeling the Patriots will hopefully sign him before the season starts. We cleared cap space with trading Hobbs(happy that hes gone will never forgive him for allowing that TD to burress). If BB wants him on the team HE WILL BE ON THE TEAM.

I dont think in any way shape or form is a deal for JT is dead. First off all this is Peppers chance for the big money, maybe after he makes his money and hasnt won a super bowl, then maybe he signs for a discount to win a super bowl, but not now.
Im still betting on JT signing here.

Re: I believe the Pats will make a big play for Peppers.

I would love to believe this is the case because we are sorely lacking a decent starter that can set the edge let alone rush the passer from the Left defensive side but lest face it, we need to resign some very critical players currently on the roster. Wilfork, Seymour to name a few, they are both going to be expensive and our defense will not be the same without them both.

Or, hes looking for a long term deal with a lot more than 16M up front.
