This is how desperate we are to maintain. ... Contaminating water tables, drilling ever deeper under our sea bed, scrapping established safety protocol, occupying sovereign nations that hate us ... And now, causing hundreds of mini earth quakes in our own communities.

    Two Gas Disposal Sites Suspended

Arkansas has been rocked with earthquakes and now scientists are investigating their relationship to earthquakes, as two natural gas companies have agreed to temporarily suspend use of injection wells in central Arkansas where earthquakes keep occurring. The high-pressure wells are used to dispose of waste water from natural gas drilling.

The two drilling operations are Chesapeake Energy and Clarita Operating. They have ceased operation of the wells near Greenbrier and Guy pending a panel meeting on the matter on March 29.

    According to the Seattle Times:

The Arkansas Oil and Gas commission says there is likely a link between the wells and the earthquakes. There have been more than 800 quakes in the area in the past six months. with a magnitude 4.7 quake, the strongest in Arkansas in 35 years, hit there Sunday.

“I can’t go into detail at this time, but I can say that we believe there is a potential correlation between injection operations and earthquakes at one or both of those wells,” said Shane Khoury, deputy director and general counsel for the commission.

If I remember correctly there are issues with the substances that are being used in this process.. and may have long term unintended consequences.

The Natural Gas is distributed amongst rock and dirt. Little pockets of gasses distributed amongst millions of tons of material.

So your telling me that blowing it up to free all the pockets of gas, to extract and leaving a large centralized pocket of air deep in the ground would cause earthquakes at a later point?

Next you'll tell me that Global Warming is a proven fact... ;)

Hey Titus I anxiously await your decision to set an example and cut off your use of dirty energy like coals gas and oil, just commit to turning off YOUR electricity (generated by coal primarily) turn off the heat in YOUR house (Nat Gas and oil) and stop using a car (the bike will work just fine).

You can turn on your computer to enlighten us about how you are making out.

    Witty.

Unfortunately, by making it a black-or-white issue, with no semblance of nuance, like your team is so famous for.... You really miss the entire point. Shocking.

Or perhaps citizens should just stay uninformed, remain good little Americans, and keep their mouths shut about the realities of these industries.

Conservation. A novel concept that CONSERVATIVES are oddly allergic to.

Interesting assertion. What's BS about "Gasland" then? This should be good.

Well the head of the Environmental Defense Fund says the movie is bunk and fracking is safe.

Environmental Defense Fund admits propaganda effort against natural gas exploration is bunk | Mark Hemingway | Beltway Confidential | Washington Examiner

Then there is the article about Radium supposedly being released by fracking:

Radium tests of post-fracking water contradict New York Times allegation | PennLive.com

Of course we know that lefties are ignorant about science for the most part as Penn & Teller demonstrated:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi3erdgVVTw

BTW Fracking has been done for over 60 years, funny no problems until Soros funded groups find a crisis, I guess we don't need to mention that Soros has large financial interest in Natural Gas that would be enhanced if Natural Gas recovery was hampered. Nah I am sure that is just a coincidence.

The DEP in PA debunks the NYT .

Yeah, Scott Anderson also believes coal outputs can be effectively sequestered. So that should give you an idea how honest this government shill is being, at the behest of energy companies.

Meanwhile, your link doesn't contain anything that supports your position. It doesn't attempt to refute Gasland, only that fracking "can be safe"... "if done right."

    Super!

Uh huh. The industry, with limitless pockets, goes to great lengths to counter pro-environmental journalism. Shocking. In other news, Chevron still isn't acknowledging what it's done in Ecuador, and Exxon dodged another bullet for the Valdez.

Meanwhile, what does any of that have to do with earthquakes in Arkansas?

    Irony.

So, you edit a poster's comment above in a discussion you're participating in, and then appeal to the one conservative comic you can find as evidence your team is the only one who "gets science?" That's rich.

You people are so selective with your grand conspiracy theories. If a lefty benefits, it's a conspiracy, if a free market oligarch benefits, it's a coincidence. Noted.

We're all aware fracking is no "new technique," as the AP tried to pass off a few weeks ago. What's different is that the oil lobby is now trying, desperately, to expand the unconventionals industry quick enough to offset conventional decline. And losing badly.

It's dirty, destructive, expensive, and will never maintain growth.

And you guys hate that reality, to the point of distorting it.

We currently have NO substitutes for fossil fuels as you know.

Fracking has been done safely for 60 years if it were such a huge danger surely someone would have noticed years ago. This is a pure scare scam like the MMGW scam where we were supposed to be seeing runaway warming by now (according to the scare predictions from 1989).

More bs from the watermelons (green on the outside red on the inside).

Not if we refuse to invest wisely, no.

No, it hasn't been done safely.

I'm sure it was noticed decades ago. But the industry was miniscule back then, so the word never spread very far.

This is really infantile. Pretending everyone who is pro-environment is somehow communist? How DID you get the moderator position?

Anyhow, I'll ask again for you to ignore: What about those earthquakes in Arkansas? Another scam?

OT: Penn and Teller aren't conservative, they're libertarian (or one is, anyway) -- big difference, since most conservatives' concern for rights and small government really only goes as far as taxes

For some applications, that's correct -- currently.

Its use has greatly increased in recent years.

Given that 60 years ago environmental regs were far less, and populations were presumably further from the sites where it was being performed, your "logic" here doesn't really hold (logic in quotes because that reasoning would mean that it never would have been noticed)

    Is that a personal attack?

Really could use some clarification here on how it isn't, if not... (preferably from a mod who doesn't have self-interest at stake)

    #75 Jersey

How long were asbestos, PCBs and lead paint used "safely"? Is that your standard for the safety of a process in society- the length of time it is done before a problem is determined?

Cute watermelon comment. Not very bright, but cute.

And what pray tell should we 'invest' in? The good alternatives are being invested in by greedy capitalist.

Examples of problems say 10 years ago or more?

Proof other than your infallible feelings?

The Green movement was founded after the discrediting of communism in the 80's. The left has long been involved in the green movement to restrict people's economic freedom.

Soros btw sees Communist China as a model we should follow.

The left is involved in the green movement as they have the common sense to know that our oil reserves are on the other side of peak, there might be better choices and that our dependence on the Middle East to supply our country is a volatile choice.

When the right cannot understand this basic premise, they elicit right wing response #6.... say it is a communist plot.

NJ so loves Fracking they just passed a law outlawing it..
