It's draft day one. Vernon Gholston went #7 overall to the Patriots. The offseason to date has seen no apparent replacement for Asante Samuel at CB to date. It's Pick 62 and the Pats are on the clock. The following corners are gone:

    Leodis McKelvin
    Dominique Rodgers-Crowmartie
    Mike Jenkins
    Tracy Porter
    Aqib Talib
    Antoine Cason
    Reggie Smith
    Patrick Lee
    Brandon Flowers

What do we do at #62? What's the plan for the picks in the third? How do these picks change if we select Ryan Clady at #7, instead of Gholston?

    Just curious. :)

(btw, I'm participating in a Mock at Orangemane (as the VIkings, actually) and these nine corners were gone by #62. Of course, the Pats took one of them at 7.)

In that scenario, I would suggest the Pat take whoever they like best out of Terrell Thomas, Chevis Jackson, and Charles Godfrey. Maybe all would be a reach, but under your scenario, lots of teams have already reached at CB and the Pats can't wait until 69 or 94 and risk that their top remaining corner (or corners) are picked.

I think the Patriots would go with a different philosophy than me and take the best player on the board. If 9 CB's have been picked, then someone they really like on the OL, DL, or possibly at RB will be available at 62. Jamaal Charles, Sam Baker, Lawrence Jackson, maybe even Calais Campbell falls that far if 9 CB's have gone.

Your scenario is not too far-fetched. I think there will be a run on

cornnerbacks in the second round. If the Pats don't wish to have

slim pickings, they will have to use the Oakland pick and trade up.

I hope they can avoid the situation DocE mentions where they have

to draft the BPA and have to select mostly offensive players.

I would think we would go with another position...perhaps OT since Gholston is already on board. Or if Clady's the pick at #7, perhaps we draft Avril. At 69 we can take one of Chevis Jackson, Charles Godfrey, or Jack Willams.

    #12 Jersey

I know the question is what to do at #62... but I cant help but get distracted at the idea that we could legitimately find a way to land Brandon Flowers and Antoine Cason. This CB class is one of the best I can remember... the idea that these guys would be available in the bottom of the first is stunning.

Other than Chris Long, I'm not sure I see our LB of the future in this class... Harvey, Ghoulson--maybe. I definately haven't seen an ILB I love. But I do see a handful of CBs that are very worth the attention, and some of them MUST drop into value range, just because there are so many of them. Plus, remember, Maualuga and Laurinaitis will be entering the draft next year.

    How about this:
If Matt Ryan drops, trade #7 to Chicago for #14 and #44.

Chicago gets their QB. New England takes Flowers at #14 (and that is NOT a reach... watch his film!) and Cason at #44 (he should last that long). Plus, we can still do some damage with #62-- maybe someone like TE John Carlson...?

Your idea makes good sense. The only problem is that Chicago

doesn't want to spend big bucks on a quarterback and seem

determined to prove that they can win without a decent quarterback.

Interesting scenario indeed. I like Chevis Jackson next (in fact, better than a few of the others mentioned), but with that run on CBs it may well be that another position is better value.

As per the Clady/Ellis thread, I really think Gholston will be gone at #7. The Pats then have a real chance to trade down to the 12-14 range which will set them up nicely to avoid your scenario. Take either Quentin Groves or the CB of your choice in round 1 and have an extra 3rd at least to play with, giving you 5 picks in rounds 2-4 to maneuver at will. That could yield some dream drafts along the lines of :

    Groves
    Cason
    Goff
    Jackson

If we take Gholston at #7, we'll still draft for value thereafter. This means we won't necessarily go CB unless that CB has more value than other available prospects. A guy like DT Red Bryant would represent tremendous value for BB, assuming he feels there's a need for a quality backup to Wilfork, and if he feels negotiations with Vince may become a bit sticky. Bryant represents immediate depth at the position, w/ long-term insurance.

The CBs available are slim-pickings (in terms of starter potential). Chevis for sure is one, Godfrey another, and an unnamed third option I'm sure will be considered. But these leftover CBs (although having upside) aren't on the same level as first-rounders such as my favorite two - Cason and Flowers.

If we select Clady at #7, we'll still want that CB, but may also be seeking a young DE/OLB to groom. Avril, I doubt makes it to #62. Others to consider perhaps in the third would be Darrell Robertson and Shawn Crable. They won't make an immediate impact, but it's time to develop someone behind AD and Vrabel.

Then of course, there's always the scenario of BB surprising everyone with offensive players. Why? Simply because the VALUE is there.

    Good topic. :)

EDIT: Thought I'd point out, this hypothetical scenario has the Pats selecting at #7 -- not trading down. Otherwise, of course trading down makes more sense.

If all 9 of them are gone (which I don't believe if likely) then the Pats should look at Jonathan Goff or Jerrod Mayo. Possibly Brandon Albert if he is available.
