The fire department example is great. Why do you have to pay for other people's random fires on their homes? Also, home insurance.

Ahhhh....so people against socialism could very well be racists and sexists....what a stupid theory for you to put out there. Honestly, what other ridiculous comment do you want make in your ceaseless efforts to insult mainstream to far-right Americans? You're beginning to tarnish those degrees you display so proudly Mav...

Look at the individuals screaming loudest against health care bills in mainstream media. Certainly fewer women and minority figures against it.

What are you trying to say here? I wonder..... Women and minorities, geez what sort of generalizations are these. Please feel free to clarify why you think that is.

We can keep debating what type of people are against nationalized health care, I don't care, this thread will keep getting bumped.

But... it's interesting that none of you can defend/refute the points being made in that link (irrespective of my comments)

The thing about the fire department that people aren't realizing. the fire department is REALLY about saving the building that is currently on fire.

The fire department is primarily about not allowing the fire to spread to other people's property, that's why we pay for it.

And in many places, tax payer money isn't used, and you have to pay for a membership to get the fire fighters assistance.

The problem with sites and adverts like this is it doesn't draw the difference between what the constitution allows government to do, and what it doesn't. It just paints this "Socialism is great" picture...

I've never heard of having to get a membership for fire fighter's assistance... link please?

I also don't think the original intent, or even current intent, of paying for fire fighters is to stop fires from spreading to *other* people's property.

It's interesting though, that you can think of it this way so you're okay with paying for stopping random fires, but not okay with paying for health.

What about paying for cops and detectives to investigate murders?

I live in a city that has had two major fires in it's history, where half the city burned down. A fire departments main purpose is to prevent such things from happening. Your property isn't the point. We don't have a department to protect someone else's home, as much as we have one so as to prevent everyone else's from burning down, cuz your's is on fire. If you don't take care of yourself, you're not killing you're neighbors too. You're health is your own concern. There is a distinct difference between the need for a fire department, or a police force, and having socialized medicine. Of course, someone who believe's that life expectancy hinges on HC, couldn't possibly understand that. ;)

Look people....we can and should debate the pro's and con's of socialism here on this board. But let's get one thing straight between every one of our incredibly brilliant minds...

America will never become socialist in our lifetime. If anything, Obama is solidifying Americans' stand against socialism. You can bet the house if he ever "tried" to use the word "socialism" in a speech to Americans, his presidency would end right there....at that moment...one way or the other.

What I am trying to tell all of you is to relax...he's not that stupid.

PR I think we're somewhat socialist already, and have been for quite some time. I think we've been slowly moving in that direction for years. We're not outright socialist, and I pray that we never will be, but we're inching closer with each passing day. Furthermore, Obama, or any other politician, wouldn't have to utter the term "socialist/ism" in order to take us there. Policy is what does that, not terms or words. If we see a substantial tax imposed on people earning $200k a year, have a gubmit run HC system implemented, pass a cap & trade bill, extend the handouts to deadbeats, etc. then what difference would the use of the term socialist matter, if we'd already be there?

I know we have a hybrid capitalistic system slowly heading toward a more socialistic form of capitalism, but I'm referring to becoming a European-type system.

And the reason I said "if Obama says the word socialism..." was to highlight the fact that Americans find it unacceptable. Saying the word is a death sentence...politically speaking. and you know this is true.

Oh, using the term absolutely is. That's why it's so important for people to pay attention to policy, as opposed to terminology. What's the old saying, actions speak louder than words.

Nope. When you don't take care of yourself and can't afford to pay for the quadruple bypass and pacemaker, who pays for it? Yup. Taxpayers.

More like policy holders do. At any rate, the point is that your heart attack, heaven forbid you have one, doesn't burn down my house, just as it doesn't cause me to die. If your home catches fire, it could burn down my house, or take down half the city if no one is there to stop it.

Right, those ridiculous emergency room costs are still paid for by you, you just don't even realize it. It would be lower if many people had basic access to preventative medicine.

The definitions of 'socialism' here are ridiculous. Based on the past year, the US is more 'socialist' than China is.

What do you mean by this? Public libraries, fire stations, cops, detectives, public highways/roads... are socialist by your standards.

I guess you missed the "can't afford it" part. Those people aren't part of any health insurance policy.

It just raises your taxes. Today. Without national health care.
