Lets me start by saying this is a hypothetical situation to think about ..

Right now as Pats fans we are all bummed out and sad knowing our Patriots deserved to make the playoffs and that having Brady would have possibly given us the one more win we needed to get to 12-4 (like the narrow losses to the Jets and Colts he usually pulls out) and go on to the playoffs,BUT it didnt happen so it is what it is

    BUT

What happens in a hypothetical situation if we trade Cassel to a team that gives us two draft picks in the first three rounds this draft and those 2 very picks happen to be players that end up in 2 or 3 years from now to be all pro defensive players for years to come (assuming the 2 picks we would get from the Cassel trade would be used on defense)

And if those 2 players become true superstars because Brady got injured allowing Cassel to show his talent and we were able to get good value for him now instead of not getting anything for him had he not played in his contract year,In 2 years down the road from now would you look back at this season saying even though Brady got hurt it was for the better because we now have 2 staples of greatness of defense? or would you still look back at this year as a 'what if Brady never got hurt how would we have finished?'

This hypothetical situation of course is with the knowledge that Brady will be fine and healthy and starting for the Patriots in 2009 and beyond

How would you reflect back on this 2008 season in 2011 or 2012 with this if we ended up getting two dominating all pro players for these picks we may get for Cassel now? - Would you still be wishing Brady would have completed the season? or be glad that Cassel was able to show his stuff and get those 2 great draft picks out of it??

I had this ready to post, but decided to hold off, but since you...

Some of you have no imagination when it comes to hypothetical situations :D

You know we could get a young Ty Law and a Willie McGinest out of the draft pick or picks we may get for Cassel - Its not likely but not impossible either

Looks like we got a fine young talent in Jerod Mayo out of a trade eh? - Who says we couldn't strike gold with another pick from a trade?

It could definitely be a silver lining I guess, but I will always always always wish Brady was healthy this year. The Steelers are a great team, but there's no doubt in my mind we'd be anxiously awaiting another SB appearance if he didn't suffer that injury.

This team is set for another run with or without whatever picks Cassel would get us. We have 3 picks in the first 2 rounds this year, no real needs on offense, and at most 3 needs on defense (for future purposes, for next year I believe we are already favored to win it all). So yeah I'll always wish Brady were healthy, ESPECIALLY if the hated Steelers win next week

If Brady were healthy the Patriots would have won the SB.There is no silver lining to his injury.

It's an interesting thought. We can think about what might have been had Brady not gotten injured, but you're right it's possible 3 years down the road we look back at how the emergence of Cassel and trading Cassel away gave us 2 more pillars to a dominant D.

    No Jersey Selected

I would see it as the Patriots making lemonade out of lemons, but that's about it.

I've tried hard to think of a better response to this "hypothetical," but that sums it up better than I ever could. Thanks.

Or we could get a Vernon Gohlson and a Adam Jones type player.......hypotheticals can also be spun to the negative side.......I prefer to keep based in reality, not Wonderland......

The season is over, done and nothing will change the outcome. Brady got hurt and did not play, nothing can change that - So I accept your Hypothetical situation and hope it to comes to reality.

The only difference is I will never be happy Tom did not get a chance to play in 2008 - Based on what I've seen from the competition this year, we missed another golden (Or in this case Silver Lombardi) opportunity.

The goal every year is to win the Super Bowl, so this year will always be a big fat missed opportunity.

Sure some extra picks could result that MIGHT give us a better chance to win a title in a future season, but I expect that never will we have such a situation where we have the amazing talent of a 18-1 team returning essentially whole (minus Asante and some spare parts), playing an easy schedule, in a year with no great teams and even very few good teams.

This would have been the easiest road to a title we ever had, with a healthy TB. Not seeing that happen is something I will always regret even if a restocked team wins again a few years down the road or even next year.

Ok, I'm a bad person and laughed at the smiley too, but it's not THAT far fetched an idea.

I mean, maintaining constant success in the NFL is incredibly difficult, especially since all the processes are usually stacked against you. Tougher opponents the year after you win, lower draft picks, free agents on your team getting overvalued due to team success, and coaches in constant flux.

Sometimes it takes something like a really bad year to get you a real cornerstone for another run. Like the Steelers needed a 3-13 under Cowher (a good football coach) to land Roethlisberger to help them make a few more runs.

I'm not saying losing Brady is a good thing, but what he's saying is a few years from now, we might be able to legitimately ask the following two questions:

    1) Without these two players (assuming we get two good ones from Cassel), would we have won our latest Super Bowl?

    2) With our defensive struggles and other injuries, would we have gone for another title in 2008 with Brady anyway?

For one less year of Brady coming off a 16-0 season?

I'll give you Ty Law, Willie McGinest, Richard Seymour, Curtis Martin and Stanley Morgan in that trade. I'd much rather have last year's team go at it again for a chance to win this year. I saw some good things out of McDaniels this year that would have made the offense even deadlier than last year if Brady had been at the helm. They didn't have that homerun mentality they had lat year, they just mixed things up and drove the opposition nuts.

We'd probably be playing a week from this Sunday if Pollard never laid that hit on Brady, so I don't think I'll ever look back on it fondly. But Cassel was a great story, and the ride itself was a lot of fun, even if it ended more abruptly than we had hoped.

As for getting draft picks out of Cassel, sure, that's great, but I'd rather have seen Brady & Moss hook up for one more full season.

Honestly, I think the best thing to come out of the season is that Matt Cassel, who from all accounts is a great guy & teammate, got to show his stuff and prove his worth (and will ultimately make himself rich), particularly in a year that otherwise he will remember for having lost a parent. I don't believe in destiny/things happening for a reason or that kind of thing, but I think its a very nice story that Cassel emerged this year and not one year later, thus allowing his father to see some of his success.

Who says he emerges one year later? - Is Matt even in the league in 2009 if Brady is not injured?,Who says another team takes a chance on an unproven QB if Matt does not play in 08? - If he DOES get signed by another team if he had only been the unplayed backup QB in 08 here, would it be for a backup or even 3rd QB depth and even if he does get signed elsewhere would they have given him the chance to prove himself ? - I think he would have left here in 2009 regardless of whether Brady played in 08 or not,He wanted to go and find a team he had a chance to show himself off and possibly have a better chance to start

The fact that Brady was injured was unfortunate to every Pats fan, coach, fellow players and for those who love to watch the best of the best perform weekly - BUT I hate to say it but it turns out to have been the opportunity Cassel had been searching for at the expense of an injury to the franchise player -

Lets face it Cassel is going to reap the big bucks because his fellow teammate and good friend had a serious injury, otherwise most likely he is on a team elsewhere in 2009 hoping to break their roster as top QB and with MUCH less money to talk about - Dont get me wrong,Matt proved himself and deserves the big bucks he earned by his play in 08 but still the opportunity came in a very unfortunate way for all of us
