Authorities call it a hate crime by two white teens against a middle-aged black man, "murder by physically assaulting and purposefully using a 1998 Ford F-250 to run over James Craig Anderson."

A surveillance video, obtained by The Associated Press and other media, shows a white Jeep in which Rice was allegedly a passenger leaving a hotel parking lot at 5:05 a.m.

Less than 20 seconds later, a Ford truck backs up and then lunges forward. Anderson's shirt is illuminated in the headlights before he disappears under the vehicle next to the curb.

Dedmon is charged as the driver of the green Ford F-250. He's being held in the Hinds County jail on an $800,000 bond. Rice posted a $5,000 bond and was released, though Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith said a grand jury expected to meet in the coming weeks could still indict Rice on a murder charge.

If convicted of a hate crime, the teens' sentences could be increased. Attorneys for both dispute that their clients were involved in a racially motivated attack.

Dedmon's attorney, Lee Agnew, said during a court hearing in July that he had seen nothing to back up the "racial allegations." Agnew did not respond to messages left this week by the AP.

Rice's lawyer, Samuel Martin, declined to comment this week. During a bond hearing last month, Martin suggested during a line of questioning with a police detective that Rice had no knowledge of any plan to indiscriminately attack a black man.

Jackson Police Detective Eric Smith testified that Dedmon had been robbed by a black man in the weeks before Anderson's death and was looking for "some sort of revenge" when the group left a party in Rankin County, allegedly in search of a random black person "to mess with." Seven people headed to Jackson in two cars, with Dedmon and Rice in separate vehicles.

The district attorney has said racial slurs were used during the attack and that Dedmon later bragged that he "just ran that n----- over."

The detective testified that Rice was a passenger in a white Jeep that arrived first at the hotel, which is just off Interstate 20 and next to a Wendy's. Smith said Rice saw Anderson near a car and thought he was trying to break into it. Instead, police said, Anderson had locked his keys inside his own vehicle.

Do you question any of the allegations, harry?

or can you just not acknowledge the reality of racism in America?

Interesting response, Harry, considering that the last thread with the same title which concerned black on white violence was met with this one:

Well if this had happened 10 times around the country and involved mobs of 20 to 100+ people you would have a point.

I bought up this incident previously on the other thread. Hopefully the perps get the death penalty.

Why would a guy running someone over with a truck in Mississippi be newsworthy in Massachusetts or anywhere else other than Mississippi, crimes, murder and whatnot happen all the time across the country and seldomly do you hear a peep outside of that particular news broadcasting range.

The big question is how this isn't making more headlines.

I'm for privatizing a lot of things, but prisons isn't one of them.

That's not true here, EDPP. Harry's extremely interested in making sure we hear all about a certain class of crimes which occur all over the world.

Why just this last month he's told us about a Muslim in Wisconsin, a fat woman in England, a handful of Muslim extremists in China, a black gang of kids in Florida and a motorcycle gang in St. Louis.

I agree but Ciavarella's lawyer doesn't share our opinion.

Mark Ciavarella Jr., Judge, Gets 28 Years In 'Kids For Cash' Case

I haven't seen much coverage of this case on a national level. The 1st time I heard about it was watching "Capitalism" by Michael Moore.

I would like to apologize for derailing your thread. Sorry about that.

Having for-profit prisons is something that should get way more media attention.

Nah, that's ok. There are alot of things which deserve more attention than they get.....most of it affecting poor people - and thus, minorities. Prisons would surely be one of those things.

Yes, it should. I tried here, several times, to show the connection between Jan Brewer and the Arizona bill which would have stopped people based on profiling and checked their IDs with the express purpose of jailing them if they could not produce the proper identification - and who would have benefited? Their private prisons, of course. Jan Brewer has very close connections with the people who own them, too. Way too close for comfort.

Anyhow - speaking of things which should be getting more attention:

A three year old girl in Missouri disappeared from the front of her house last week. I have no idea of her immigration status - I do know she is hispanic and cute as a button. They did not issue an Amber Alert - they gave both of her parents a lie dector test and said they both flunked - and today, 6 days later, they arrested a 43 year old male neighbor - who is white - and who's admitted to grabbing her, putting a plastic bag over her head and throwing her body in a floodway ditch. He complained that it took her "about an hour" to die.

Now excuse me for being so crass as to mention it - but if the racial situation were reversed, and it was a Hispanic man and a cute little white girl who was senselessly and brutally murdered, this whole board, as well as the whole world, would be up in arms about immigrants and the dangers they pose - and it wouldn't matter if the guy was born and raised here, either.

But this - hardly a word - not even from Harry who claims to care so much about all the violence in the world.

yup, pretty blonde girl - media headlines

Imagine if the killer were a Muslim?

and btw, yeah, for-profit prisons are a bad idea. The fewer people profiting off incarceration, the better off all citizens are.

As usual most people constantly miss the point. It isn't that racism doesn't exist, or that race driven attacks don't happen. The point is how differently they're sometimes treated.

BTW, the death penalty was made for people like this.

Oh, hate crimes, and cop killer laws, are BS. Crimes against any person are wrong. Color, gender, and job shouldn't change that fact.

In their "do-gooder dream world" your post is considered racist.

To THEM "mentioning realty is racism" they are horrified at the thought of facing reality so the only way out for them is Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh, look the other way.

That makes sense - to a point. And to that point, I agree with you.

But don't you ever ask yourself why they're treated differently?

And if so, what's your answer if not racism?

I would like to hear the liberal answer to that.
