    #12 Jersey

During the draft and after Belichick selected his 1st rounder, many of us were a little confused and upset over picking a CB as that pick.

Looking back now it makes us look a little foolish after questioning the pick as Devin now becomes possibly the most important rookie to ever start in his first season under the BB regime.

Without selecting McCourty can you imagine Willhite or Wheatley starting?

Sometimes you have to wonder if Belichick has ESP

Unless Devin has a horrid season,I think we should be glad he didn't select the player YOU wanted him to pick as the #1

    #3 Jersey

I actually asked 'WHO?' when I first read it!

But when you actually think about it, it is a good draft pick :)

    No kidding.

Worst case is that the team has a top-level talent out there who based on sheer athletic ability, has a chance to make plays as opposed to KNOWING w/ the W&W boys, there is NO chance of a play being made!

Wilhite could still be your #2 CB with mccourty at nickel i would much rather ease mccourty into the starting role.

I really dont wanna see mccourty looking around bewildered as wr's pick up 1st downs because he didnt know his assignment in our bend but don't break zone.

    #11 Jersey

Actually I wanted the Pats to trade the pick to Oakland for Nnamdi Asomugha, I just never said anything about it until now. Yeah, that's it.........:)

That very well might happen. Especially since these days a nickel corner is as much a starter as anyone really.

Later injuries don't negate earlier analysis. Brady going down in week 1 (2008) doesn't mean that the Patriots shouldn't have been favorites to get back to the Super Bowl prior to the start of that season.

It will only be important if the kid performs on the field. If he sucks, then it would not be that important (for this year anyway)

Agree to an extent, but one could argue that since we always seem to have an injury or two to our CBs, the pick of McCourty was prudent in advance of this very situation.

Sometimes BB really does know more about his team than us fans...go figure.

If this would have happened without McCourty we would have almost HAD to have made a move to get some stop gap corner. As it is we can break in the young guys and hope they pick it up quick.

Using that logic, one could argue prudence for pretty much every position, regardless of any other reasoning. Outside of kicker, punter and snapper, what position is really safe?

I think it's more that they got insanely lucky, in this case.

Hmmm, let me explain a different way, I don't think I did well the first time. The reason most people were upset at the time with the McCourty pick was not because he's a bad player, but because we had perceived areas of "need" that people thought we should address through the draft.

But given how easily injuries can happen (especially to our secondary in recent years), it makes sense to draft players you think are good players, regardless of position (within reason of course).

I guess I was arguing more the idea that you draft players based on how good they are, not on their chance to start right away, since you never know what areas will become needs due to injury.

This is all predicated on the idea that McCourty proves he can play. I'll reserve opinion on that until I start seeing real football.

in other words, our depth and postion at CB or possible lack of it was ignored by a lot of us pre draft and focussed on the glaring needs e.g pass rusher. Everyone wondered wwhy we made this pick because we thought we were well stocked. Now only it becomes apparent that without bodden , we are down to whilhite. Of course if they didnt pick mccourty doesnt mean they wouldnt have addressed the position elsewhere.

Eh, I guess. My only real point is if they think McCourty is the best player available (regardless of position), this is an example of why it's a good idea to take him, and not force yourself to draft a lesser position in an area of need. Depth goes away very quickly sometimes.

Evaluating the correctness of a draft pick based on a pre-season injury is every but as erroneous as evaluating it based on perceived need at the time of the draft.

Not 100% no, but it would be the heaviest weighted factor. Assuming players are rated by my scouts from 1-100. If I have depth at corner and weakness at OLB, and at my pick there's a corner who's 85 and the best available OLB is 70, I'm taking the corner. One, because over time this gives you best pool of players and should even out. Two, because you can't count on a rookie contributing right away in year one anyway, at least not as a starter.

Now, if the corner was rated 85 and there was an OLB at 82, I'm probably taking the OLB. The overall player ability is negligible, and so need factor helps to balance it out.
