It takes a year to develop a NT, so the team needs to judge whether we have a potential one on the team or whether our 2011 NT needs to drafted in 2010. If that is the case, I could see using our first or high second as Belichick has done before three times for a starting defensive lineman.

If Mt Cody is a starting NT in this league, wouldn't Belichick be strongly tempted to draft him early?

Why do you think, at this moment, that the Pats need to get another NT?

Shouldnt be high considering they have the best NT in football, especially when the ball is in their court when it comes to his contract.

The ball's in their court, but a desperate team could make an offer the Patriots couldn't match. That said, I'm still not sure what argument mg's trying to make here.

    A) We have a NT that we can force to play for the 2010 season, as I assume we will.
    B) We need to develop a NT for the 2011 season.
    C) If a NT needs a year to develop, we need to draft that NT in the 2010 draft unless we think Brace or someone on the team is Wilfork's replacement.
    D) It makes no sense to wait until Wilfork is gone to find a replacement aht won't be ready for a year.

Now, I ask again, how important is it to draft a NT?

To be much more blunt, if Wilfork has been franchised, and we don't think that Brace is the answer, I think that we would would consider Mt. Cody with our first or second draft choice.

It's not an either/or: the Pats can franchise Wilfork and still have time to reach a new contract (as AV did the first time he was franchised).

I agree, but if there is no agreement by Draft Day, it would be xtremely risky for the patriots to just hope that they will sign Wilfork and pass on a starting NT in the draft.

Not really. They could always just pay him what he wants and kill their salary structure. :(

Then what was the point of taking Brace, Pryor, and Richard this year?

Let's pull a Matt Millen and take an NT every year in the hopes that one will eventually work out. :p

I expect the Patriots to draft Cody with their #1 pick to

replace Wilfork. Wilfork will be franchised and traded to the

    highest bidder.

So that means Bill will trade him for a 2nd round draft choice and throw in Derrick Burgess

Probably another #1 pick in 2011.

I would not mind doing that in the 4th through 7th rounds every year as I am a disciple of the Parcellian Planet Theory of Big Guys who can Move!

But, yeah, taking a NT project on the first day seems a bit risky to me, given other needs and the age structure of this team.

    #12 Jersey

This is excellent thinking! I love this post. And I agree 100%. BB NEEDS TO DRAFT MOUNT CODY!!!!!

1.) If we franchise Wilfork, history says things will get ugly and it will become a one year deal at beast and a team distraction at worst.

2.) No "if" about it, Mount Cody is the best 3-4 NT I have ever seen in college and will be a starter in the NFL from day 1,ala Mayo. Worst case scenario, he waits a year while WIlfork plays out a final season. (I doubt Wilfork would sign a one year deal, unless there is a no franchise him again next season.) Cody sucks up double teams better than anybody I have ever seen. He plays in our defense at Alabama. He knows our line calls. He allows ILBs to roam free and become playmakers. He owns the middle of the line.

3.) six foot five inches tall and over 380 pounds. And he can dunk a basketball. BB wants big athletic guys, there is NO ONE better who fits that title better than this guy.

Other posters that can not see this, need to understand that 3-4 NT's coming out of college are rare. And that the NT position is key in running a successful 3-4 defense.

This is the best case scenario. Although I think Parcells would give up two first rounders to sign Wilfork.

Mt. Cody is not a project! He is the real deal.

I have said it before and I will say it again. He is a better 3-4 NT now than Wilfork is. And Wilfork is a pro bowler. I mean no disrespect to Wilfork but that is a testament to how good Cody is.

They provide depth, with the ability to develop into something serviceable in case of injury.

But none of those three are special; ala Mt. Cody.

Why did BB take Hill in the second round, when he had 3 first rounders starting? Depth on the D line is important to BB.
