Why would anyone oppose this bill, some of the contractors rely solely on government contracts, so your tax dollar is then used to influence those who make decisions about their existence..

While I am sympathetic to the need for transparency, I can't help but wonder how they are not required to disclose this information already (separate from contracting)...at the very least, aren't the groups they give to required to disclose their contributors? Where do groups like Open Secrets get their info?

Obama wasn't proposing legislation, perhaps he should have he was going to issue and executive order without any debate on the pros and cons of the issue. BTW would the order include disclosing all political donations by unions?

Unions are usually not federal contractors, that is what this thread is about.

It is opposed by the Plutocratic Party of the Right... for most of us it is common sense.

If it is such a great idea then Obama should have the dems intro legislation that can be debated openly. My guess is that the administration sees a partisan advantage so an executive order is being considered rather than legislation with an open debate. You know the democratic process.

Not sure what Obama was trying to accomplish, but this is already illegal:

Then why are the Republicans fighting it?? What is sicker is that many of these companies are solely funded by Government Contracts, so our tax dollar is being used for this purpose.

Perhaps they are objecting to Obama trying to bypass the legislative process.

Why is Barry trying to sneak this in without an open hearing on the merits of the proposal?

Because he is the president and can do this type of thing, just like any other president can..

If you read any of the literature, they are claiming that they are violating the rights of the mom and pop businesses, but in reality there is nothing wrong with knowing who Boeing, Grumman Allied et al are giving your tax dollar to.

The new right wing granny state wants to keep it secret, but isn't the right of the American People to know who gives what??? but introducing this legislation it will keep us in the dark where the Republicans want us to be...

You cannot change the system overnight and you cannot justify a non-action with another non-action. I am all for any action however small it may be - the big picture requires immediate attention. All these issues that may seem trivial to some are all responsible for our deficit ... to me that is why no action to clean up DC is to small.

On the other hand ... Obama needs to keep his campaign promise of disclosure. He has not been the open door that he promised. Outside of national security he needs to go the extra mile within his own administration to make his hand stronger when requesting the same of others.

Sure, why not? We already tried the dynasty thing (Bush I and Bush II) and that didn't work out.
