    Republicans block bill to lift military gay ban

    Don't Ask Don't Tell

    Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, had been seen as the crucial 60th vote because she supports overturning the military ban. But Collins sided with her GOP colleagues in arguing that Republicans weren't given sufficient leeway to offer amendments to the wide-ranging policy bill.

    The vote fell mostly along party lines, although Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, both D-Ark., sided with Republicans to block the bill. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., also voted against the measure as a procedural tactic. Under Senate rules, casting his vote with the majority of the Senate enables him to revive the bill at a later date.

    Advocates of lifting the 17-year-old ban had been optimistic that the Democratic-controlled White House and Congress could overcome objections to repeal. The move is unpopular among Republicans, military officers and social conservatives.

    If you can't get the ladies from Maine on your side, it's a bad bill (or tactic).

    I don't know dude. I understand what people in the military are saying but the whole thing seems to fly in the face of the concept of "equality before the law".

    What have the experiences been elsewhere? Are there other countries that do not have this restriction in place for their military personnel? What was the impact?

    Collins & Snowe are running a little scared right now, their "Partisian Bullsh!t" is catching up with them, the Republicans didn't put them in office to Vote with the enemy, they are considered by many in Maine to be Democrat Moles.

    Isn't it a shame that we need a special "rights bill" to cover certain citizens of the USA who should already be covered under the same laws which protect the rest of us from things like discrimination?

    Your watching th elast gasps of old white haired dudes. 85%of the country is for it being allowed. The whole idea that some gay guy is going to try and convert the guy, or rape the guy with him in the Fox hole while under fire is crazy.

    Ok, here's what I found: 22 out 26 NATO countries allow GLB citizens to serve openly. The Israelis do as well, and it is hard to argue that they are not a formidable force.

    On the other hand, the list of countries that do not allow it puts us in some pretty bad company.

    Countries that disallow homosexuals from serving in the military

    * Cuba
    * China
    * Egypt

    * Greece <<<---Huh???
    * Iran
    * Jamaica
    * North Korea
    * Pakistan
    * Saudi Arabia

    * Serbia
    * Singapore
    * South Korea

    Good post ... brings back the stories of the segregated negro units in our armed services. You can fight for and die for your country but you can't live like the rest of us.

    How do you know the remaining 15% are old white haired dudes? Have you seen the breakdown of those who supported Prop 8 in CA? Just 16 counties out of 42 that voted for the proposition are over 75% white. 17 of them were over 25% Latino.

    I'm thinking of McCain and the core of conservatives that threatened to filibuster the bill because it a the gay provision. I never claimed that the 15% were old white haired dudes, but i bet many are.

    I'm talking about the WHOLE country not just one state, i don't know whats going on in cali maybe HD can explain it.

    The was a political dog and pony show for the dem base. See H Reid voted against cloture, so Dirty Harry was for the bill before he voted against the bill.

    Harry Reid didn't want to go against Obama, Obama says "marriage is between man/women"

    Obama and that Beauty Queen that the liberal media crucified are in the same boat, the left wing media destroyed the beauty queen for having the same views as their little darling Obama.

    Reid's vote was a Parliamentary tactic.

    Hard to tell if they're lying or if they're just that ignorant of how things actually work.

    Which is it, guys? Deliberately misleading or honestly ignorant?

    As I said it was a dog and pony show for the stupid and his base (big overlap there).

    That is why Reid voted the way he did.

    has McCain explained -- or denied -- his flip-flop on DADT yet?

    (btw, did you see the video of him yesterday refusing to answer questions and repeating the same line over and over? As much of a disappointment as Obama has been, McCain reminded me yesterday of how utterly disappointing McCain was every time I saw him speak during his campaign. What I initially thought was the first race bt 2 attractive candidates in my lifetime might have turned out to be the worst)

    No you lying about why he did it was the dog and pony show. Some of us non neo-cons actually believe in equal treatment under the law.
