As if I couldn't hate this guy any further:

Hines Ward Said He Sat Out Against Patriots Because New England's Secondary Is So Bad - NFL - NESN.com

Maybe he's right our secondary lacks adequate personnel. But in this case, I will shoot the messenger. I hate this guy.

He said nothing unreasonable in that quote. He is right. Our secondary is a sieve.

I just hope we pick up our game as the season progresses. I am frankly astonished at BB's management of the secondary, from the drafting of Glass-I to the release of Bodden.

No issue with what he said, but people who tend to talk a lot usually get something happen to them. I just have this feeling that we will be going to Heinz field again.

Yeah, not much to quibble with there. Roethlisberger ate the Pats' pass defense alive. The truth hurts.

    We can only hope.

Sadly, though - our defensive personnel can only get worse between now and then in the sense that we're actually healthy on that side of the ball. In years past, we could rely on players coming back. Not so this year.

Maybe he didn't want to get knocked out again by Chung(?).

The sad thing about it is that comments like that wont solicit a single response from anyone on this defense. I dont expect our guys to comment, but a response in their attitude and play on the field would be refreshing.

There isnt a single guy on this defense that I personally think carries that sort of mean streak. Spikes is close, but his actions are erratic and outta place. He seems more mentally unstable than mean to me. Hell, Ive seen our offense in more skirmishes and play with more attitude than our defense. Can we line Mankins up at DT?

I can't take issue with Ward pointing out that Belichick cut most of the good (or even decent) players in the secondary, leaving no talent behind. He's just stating facts.

Considering Ward is due to make $4 million next year as well as in 2013, then it may not have been the wisest career choice for him to let his management know that he's not needed on the field.

It's easy to say something like that in hindsight after a win. Even though he's correct about the defense, would he be saying this if the Pats defense had performed exactly the same, but the Pats offense had performed better and had won a shootout?

Sounds like some hindsight to this casual viewer.. last year everyone wanted to run Brandon out of town he was practically convicted of murder on this board in June, Bodden was injured last year and had injury issues this year, most of the rest are unemployed or playing reserve roles.. so not sure who most of the good or decent players in the secondary are??? The best of the lot remain; Chung and McCourty.

We have had some crappy secondary players for a while now, Dowling might be ok if he shakes the injury issues..

After the cleveland game iam sure he thought the run defense was putrid too and then they lost the game....its easy to make comments after the win. How about saying it before ...?

not really. I was extremely vocal when Meriweather was cut about hating the move (given that Sanders had already been cut), I didn't like the Butler cut when it happened, and I made it pretty clear that cutting Bodden and IRing Dowling a day later made absolutely no sense to me. No hindsight needed here.

The truth friggin hurts I guess....but I cant argue with what he said. See, at least other players around the league had RESPECT for Merriweather. I think they respected Bodden's game as well. When BB dismantled the secondary this year....a lot of game planning must have changed. OC's aren't exactly shaking in their boots over Adams and Moulden (sp), or Sergio Brown. I think McCorty benefitted from merri out there...he hasn't been same since he left. Not sure what BB was thinking in dumping all the guys he did....without having competent guys to back them up....

You don't think the squeelers management already knows that though? They don't need Ward anymore. Good possession receiver now....but with Antonio, M. Williams, etc, and the TE'S ....Ward is expendable.

Bolded for emphasis, couldn't agree with that last part more. Didn't hate the Sanders cut when it happened, since i saw it as a vote of confidence in Chung/Meriweather. Whether the third safety was going to be Barrett, Brown, or Dowling, it made some sense. Then Meriweather was cut too and it stopped making any sense at all. After that, there was no margin for error: either Brown or Barrett *had to* be a starter-caliber player, and it wasn't even due to injury. By design, Belichick was banking on one or both of those guys making a huge leap. That it failed should surprise no one. And even then, I didn't see it getting this bad (Ihedigbo as a starter should never, under any circumstances, be allowed to happen).

When Wilhite was cut, I figured that it meant Butler was ready to step up. then Butler was cut, and I figured it must mean Bodden and Dowling are healthy. And then Bodden's cut, and I figure that it must mean that Dowling's healthy... and then Dowling's IRed one day later. This sequence of moves, which leaves us with Antwaun Molden as the #3 CB, is objectively indefensible. If there's anyone on here who can't acknowledge that, then they're not even worth having a conversation with.
